The in-form Muirfield has earned a start in Friday’s $170,000 Albury Cup following his return to the winners’ list with successive victories at Sale and Sandown.
All going well, trainer Mike Moroney will then target the Group Three Easter Cup at Caulfield with the four-year-old.
“We are considering the Albury Cup with him because he has performed well right-handed before,” Moroney said.
“He’s always looked a smart horse. I was getting him ready for the Queensland Derby last winter and he knocked a tendon so had I to stop him.
“He had an operation and he’s been sound so far.”
The Albury Cup (2000m) is a quality handicap with a maximum topweight of 61kg.
Muirfield finished third to Shoot Off in the Group Three Frank Packer Plate (2000m) on a heavy track at Randwick last April before suffering the injury.
Since returning the gelding has won two of his three starts including a Showcase rating 0-72 over 1600m at Sale on February 5 and a Sandown rating 0-82 (1800m) on a slow track on March 7.
“He was favourite for the Tour of Victoria Final (1600m) at Moonee Valley (on February 24) but he had a an elevated temperature on the morning of the race so we had to scratch him and treat him,” Moroney said.
Meanwhile, the Moroney-trained Glass Harmonium’s career remains in the balance.
After Glass Harmonium finished seventh of eight in the Australian Cup earlier this month, a veterinary examination revealed the horse had an entrapped epiglottis.
Moroney was continuing to have the grey scoped after his trackwork to discover the extent of the problem.
Glass Harmonium, winner of the Group One Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington last spring, has already undergone surgery for a throat problem.
He had a tie forward operation to fix a displaced palate which affected his performances in the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.
Damien Oliver, who rode the six-year-old imported entire in the Australian Cup, said after the race the horse was having trouble with his breathing.
