As More Joyous and Nash Rawiller returned to the Randwick enclosure victorious once again on Saturday, the champion mare’s devoted strapper stood proudly in the winner’s stall waiting to greet her.
Dave Meijer has attended to More Joyous throughout her career and knows plenty about the family having also worked with the mare’s dam Sunday Joy and that mare’s half-sister Tuesday Joy.
“I’m absolutely blown,” Miejer said after Saturday’s thrilling Queen Elizabeth victory by More Joyous.
“I looked after her mother Sunday Joy as well but this horse has won eight Group Ones.
“I remember I was stoked when she won the Flight Stakes, to get just one Group One. Now she’s won eight.
“I looked after her mum from day one. I looked after Tuesday Joy the same and now this one.”
More Joyous proved she could run a strong 2000 metres as Rawiller dictated terms from the front in the Queen Elizabeth before the mare strode away from the high class field.
“It gives us a bit of closure that she can definitely run the 2000,” Meijer said.
“So if they want to have a crack at the Cox Plate with her they can.
“The only time that she had raced over 2000 metres she went to war with So You Think in the Cox Plate (2010) and everyone else seemed to be riding for second.
“Here we come.”
Meijer has worked for Gai Waterhouse for close to two decades and the trainer acknowledges the role of Meijer.
“The care she gets from Dave Meijer is so special,” Waterhouse said.
