Leading Melbourne apprentice Katelyn Mallyon suffered severe concussion and was taken to hospital after a fall at Flemington on a day when two horses died in separate races.
Mallyon’s mount Deliver the Dream fell in the second heat of Saturday’s Winter Championship.
She had earlier won the Morrison Handicap (1600m) on the Danny O’Brien-trained The New Boy, but crashed heavily when her mount appeared to clip heels approaching the 100 metres of Saturday’s 1400 metre event.
Mallyon was conversant and could move all limbs after the fall.
She was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in stable condition for observation.
After winning on The New Boy, Mallyon sent a special message on television to Michelle Payne who suffered back and rib injuries in a race fall at Donald last Sunday.
Payne tweeted on Saturday night she was at the hospital awaiting news on the young rider.
Deliver the Dream escaped injury in Saturday’s fall but two other horses were earlier put down.
The John McArdle-trained two-year-old Absolute Spirit fractured his near fore sesamoid as he crossed the line fifth in the Trevor Clarke Handicap (1000m).
The Not A Single Doubt gelding, ridden by Danny Nikolic, was having only his third start after finishing fourth at his Flemington debut in December and finishing second at Echuca on May 5.
Sparks Burn, trained by Shane Fliedner and ridden by Payne’s partner Mark Zahra, broke down in the home straight when he fractured an off fore fetlock.
Flemington chairman of stewards Robert Cram said routine autopsies would be carried out on both horses.
