Top jockey Glyn Schofield has won two races on Phenomenal Lass but it was his son Chad’s turn to get into the winners’ circle on the stakes-bound mare at Randwick on Saturday.
Trainer Joe Pride engaged the lightweight apprentice to partner Phenomenal Lass in the Spring Handicap (1100m) and the rider took little credit for the “sit and steer job” after the mare raced to a 3-3/4-length win.
“I can’t really take much credit for that, I just pointed her in the right direction and she was far too good for them,” 17-year-old Schofield said.
“Obviously she had by far the best form on paper in the race so it was good to see her get out and win so dominantly.
“Dad has won twice on her in her first two starts and he told me a bit about her and it definitely helped.”
Phenomenal Lass had her first 20 starts for trainer Paul Murray with Saturday’s race just the mare’s second outing since joining Pride’s team at Warwick Farm.
Pride has the goal to win a stakes race with Phenomenal Lass this spring so he wanted to see the mare win with authority in the fillies and mares benchmark 80 event.
“It was pretty painless and it was nice to see her win like that because if you expect her to go to stakes company she has got to win like that,” Pride said.
“She’s a nice, uncomplicated mare who is doing everything I’m asking her to do. She has good strength, she’s already won in this grade and I don’t think it’s a massive leap up for her to to go to fillies and mares stakes company.”
Pride has the Listed Sheraco Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on September 10 as a possible stakes option for Phenomenal Lass who has twice been stakes-placed in Listed grade.
Phenomenal Lass ($2.70 fav) jumped straight to the front carrying 56kg after Schofield’s 3kg claim and controlled the race from the front.
Schofield cuddled her up the rise before the mare put the race away very quickly from the 300-metre mark.
French Rose ($19) led in the chasing pack with Lady La Douce ($4) another length away third.
