Gai Waterhouse will head bush with regally-bred filly Lobster who will make a humble debut at Queanbeyan on Thursday.
Owned by John Singleton’s Strawberry Hill Stud, Lobster is by Redoute’s Choice out of Group One winner Universal Queen.
An 1100-metre country maiden might be a low-key start for a blueblood but Bruce Slade, racing manager for Waterhouse, says it is an ideal stepping stone.
“Gai tends to like to take horses to country or provincial tracks before she takes them to town,” Slade said.
“It’s a nice race to kick her off in.
“Hopefully she can progress from Queanbeyan to the highest level.”
While Queanbeyan, on the outskirts of Canberra, is not a regular hunting ground for Waterhouse, Lobster’s appearance there is not without precedence.
The stable took two runners to the track last month, Blended and Flying Ash, and both came away winners.
