A win on Musical Hit gave Dwayne Dunn a boost on the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington.
There have been lean pickings for the jockey over the past few weeks with his headline horse Rekindled Interest third in both the Cox Plate and the Mackinnon Stakes.
The 2000m rating 95 race was a long way from those Group One races but satisfying for Dunn and trainer Ken Keys.
“It’s been a tough week,” Dunn said.
“The Cox Plate was very disappointing obviously and I had to hope something else opened up.”
A six-year-old with just 12 starts before Saturday’s Antler Luggage Handicap, Musical Hit has recovered from suspensory injuries but Keys never gave up on him.
The gelding raced better than midfield and held off the challenge from Domesky by a long head with Con Act another half-length away third.
“He’s a homebred,” Keys said.
“He’s taken a while to come good but he showed us a lot early so we kept going.
“The blinkers on today really helped and let’s hope there’s bigger and better things to come.”
