Evergreen veteran Conciliatory, lining up for back-to-back wins at Nowra on Friday, was once considered the slowest horse in Colbey Hill’s Moruya stables.
But at nine years of age Conciliatory, a seven-time winner, has found a new lease of life.
The gelding, with two kilogram-claiming apprentice Yusuke Ichikawa aboard, tackles the His And Hers Spirals Benchmark 55 Hcp (1400m).
Conciliatory has won two of his past three starts, the latest when a three-length winner of a 1460m Benchmark 55 event at Queanbeyan on November 20.
“He’s grown a leg lately,” Hill admitted.
“To be honest I haven’t changed anything. It could be because his rating has dropped and his weight has come down accordingly.
“That’s been a big benefit.
“He’s never been a good trackworker. There was a time when he was the slowest horse in my stable but at the end of the day he’s very honest.”
Hill, who owns Conciliatory, has had the gelding since purchasing him as a four-year-old from Melbourne.
The astute horsewoman admits to being soft on Conciliatory when it comes to trackwork.
“I barely gallop him,” she said.
“He goes to the beach, pool and swims. He’s not the world’s best swimmer either but he loves the water.
“He’s lucky to get through a lap, would never make the equine Olympic swimming team.
“And while he’s been in work for a while, he’s thriving.
“He just enjoys the stable environment.”
Conciliatory commenced his current campaign on July 8 and since winning last start Colby has been delighted with his progress.
“He’s done very well. I couldn’t be happier with him,” she said.
“The horse is spot-on, hasn’t missed a beat.
“He gets in with 55.5kg after the apprentice’s claim and he’s the sort of horse that handles all types of going, so a wet track wouldn’t worry him.
“He likes Nowra and a repeat of his two previous wins would put him right in the picture tomorrow.”
