The Sydney autumn carnival is over for Corey Brown after he was suspended for careless riding aboard TJ Smith Stakes runner-up Rain Affair on a forgettable afternoon for the top jockey.

It was Brown’s second penalty for careless riding in as many days after he was handed a six-meeting suspension for his effort aboard Coventry at Canterbury on Friday.

That penalty starts tonight and doesn’t expire until April 26, ruling him out of the rich Doncaster Mile program at Randwick next Saturday.

His suspension for his ride on Rain Affair will start on April 27 meaning he now also misses the final day of the carnival and the plum ride aboard Permit in the Group One Sydney Cup.

It was a tough end to a tough day for Brown, whose only bright spot on the nine-race program was a Group Two Chairman’s Handicap win aboard the Chris Waller-trained Permit.

He started the day being beaten aboard odds-on favourite Ichihara in the Kindergarten Stakes after she dwelt at the start and ran into trouble in the straight before finally getting clear when the race was over, finishing third to Dances On Stars.

He almost had a Group One in the bag aboard Rain Affair who led but was nailed in the final bounds by Master Of Design.

Brown was also fined $200 by stewards for overuse of the whip on Rekindled Alliance in the Australian Derby.

“From the start of the day it has been a bit of a wipe-out,” Brown told stewards.

Chief stipe Ray Murrihy was a little sympathetic, capping Brown’s fine when he could have bumped it up because the whip offence occurred in a Group One race.

“I won’t add to the suffering,” Murrihy said.

Brown will be free to ride on May 10.
