Multiple Group winning mare Sister Madly has been retired just days after disappointing in a barrier trial.
The superbly related six-year-old, a half-sister to champion Hong Kong sprinter Silent Witness, pulled up with a sore foot following the trial on Monday.
Subsequent tests showed she was also suffering from a throat problem which has plagued her in the past.
On Thursday, owners Segenhoe Stud and trainer John Sadler made the decision to send her to the broodmare barn.
“The decision was made this morning and it’s the right decision,” Sadler said.
“She’s had niggling issues with her throat and foot, her throat being the main one.
“Segenhoe has been very fair to us to give us another season with her.
“She had a few issues earlier on but we got over them….the little problems have re-occurred and it’s getting to mid-September and she’s a valuable mare.”
Sister Madly did her early racing for Anthony Cummings who trained her to a Group Three victory and two Group One placings.
Transferred to Sadler last spring after being sold to Segenhoe, she added two more Group wins and finished runner-up to Sepoy in the Manikato Stakes and More Joyous in the Tristarc Stakes.
A daughter of Redoute’s Choice, Sister Madly retires the winner of four of her 17 starts and more than $680,000 prize money.
