Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags has been retired with a tendon injury and his owner Phyllis Wyeth is considering stud offers.
His retirement came just weeks after Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another was retired to stand at stud in Japan.
I’ll Have Another was found to have a leg injury on the eve of the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the United States triple crown.
Although the prognosis was good for Union Rags to return to racing, Wyeth’s bloodstock advisor Russell Jones said she had made the decision it was the right time to retire him.
“This is the right time of the year to be talking to these guys so she wants to have the word out there that we’re moving ahead, that the decision has been made,” Jones told the Philadelphia Daily News.
Union Rags won five of his eight starts and earned $US1,798,800 ($A1.73 million).
He was one of the early favourites for the Kentucky Derby but after he finished seventh, Wyeth and trainer Michael Matz decided to miss the Preakness and head to the Belmont.
