Victoria Derby 2020 – What the jockeys said

Read what each of the jockeys had to say about the runs of their mounts in the 2020 Victoria Derby at Flemington on Saturday.

Winning Jockey: Lachie King:

“It’s just unbelievable. I’m a bit emotional, to be honest. It’s amazing.

“We thought we could win today. Just whether we could pull it off. Just everything went to plan it was a fairytale. Really have to thank Denis. He’s been the best thing to happen in my career. I just can’t believe it.

When the horse strode up on the outside in the straight: “I thought I was going too good. I thought I had to wait a bit more. Dad just said ‘patience, patience and just try and buy as much time as you can. I was going too good and I thought ‘geez’ I have to get this right, pull something out.

“When I let him down he just exploded for me. It was just unbelievable. I can’t explain it. So amazing.

“I was just saying, I’ve had so many dreams and I’ve woken up before the post thinking I’ve won a Group 1. I couldn’t believe it when I hit the post and I’d actually won. It’s unbelievable.

Mark Zahra on Albarado: “Had his chance but it was a little too ‘stop start’ for him.’

John Allen on Let’s Karaka Deel: “He ran quite well. He’s probably just a prep away.”

Damien Oliver on Young Werther: “Had his chance. Ran well. The winner just outstayed us on the day.”

Jye McNeil on Redwood Shadow: “Just didn’t come together for him today. Probably on a downward path.”

Damian Lane on Token Spirit: “Good honest run.”

Michael Walker on Born To Succeed: “Just doesn’t stay.”

Ben Melham on Wisaka: “He ran well. Probably not quite seasoned enough yet.”

Fred Kersley on Hit The Spot: “Walked and sprinted.”

Billy Egan on Cherry Tortoni: “Super run. Just forced to make up too much ground from the bad gate.”

Jamie Kah on Cetshwayo: “Disappointing.”

Hugh Bowman on Wertheimer: “He didn’t appreciate the ridiculously slow speed.”

James McDonald on Tour Of Duty: “A slowly run race it was never a hope.”

Daniel Moor on Kenzan: “He was a fraction keen early and that told late but he’ll improve into his four-year-old season.”
