Hong Kong off, change of plans for Zaaki

Connections of Zaaki have shifted their focus to Western Australia, opting out of international competition in Hong Kong. Trainer Annabel Neasham announced on Wednesday afternoon that the nine-year-old will target the $1.5 million Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) on December 9.

James McDonald has received approval from the HKJC to ride Zaaki and will return for the major international meeting the following day.

Neasham expressed a desire to compete in Hong Kong but cited concerns about Zaaki spending three weeks there after the race. Consequently, they have decided to keep him domestically for a Group 1 weight-for-age race, particularly one over a distance that suits him well.

Drawing parallels to their approach with Laws Of Indices and My Oberon last year, Neasham emphasized that Zaaki, being an older horse now, is well-suited for this strategic decision. Zaaki finished fourth in the recent G1 Champions Stakes, setting the stage for his upcoming challenge in the Northerly Stakes.
