Stephen Jones’ ban reset after breach of disqualification terms

Scone-based trainer Stephen Jones will now serve his full three-and-a-half-year ban again, with the penalty reset after he was found to have breached the terms of his disqualification.

In February, the NSW Racing Appeal Tribunal upheld Jones’ disqualification over race-day treatment offences, ruling him out until October 2027.

Despite the ban, Jones sought permission in March to attend the Magic Millions Yearling Sales in June—a request Racing NSW ultimately denied.

However, after the sales, stewards received evidence showing Jones entered the grounds at 9:03am on June 2 and left at 11:11am.

An investigation followed, and Racing NSW stewards concluded Jones had breached Rule AR263(1)(m), which triggers a restart of the disqualification period if violated.

As a result, Jones—who has trained over 550 winners—will now be banned until December 2028.
