Kauto Star statue plan unveiled

Haydock and Betfair have announced plans for a statue of Kauto Star to celebrate his achievements at the Merseyside track.

Sculptor Willie Newton has been commissioned to make a bronze of the 11-year-old in recognition of his four Betfair Chase victories at Haydock.

His most recent success in the Grade One feature prompted emotional scenes as he rolled back the years to beat Gold Cup winner Long Run by eight lengths last month.

β€œI am thrilled at this fantastic gesture from Haydock and Betfair,” Kauto Star’s owner Clive Smith said.

β€œThe horse has really captured the public’s imagination and hearts throughout his career, never more so than in the Betfair Chase at Haydock last month, and it is an honour to have him recognised in this way.”

Trainer Paul Nicholls added: β€œKauto Star gave me my proudest day in my 20 years as a trainer when he won his fourth Betfair Chase last month, and this is deserved recognition for the great horse.

β€œMany thanks to Haydock and Betfair for commissioning the bronze, it will be a constant reminder of that amazing day.

β€œI used to ride against Willie (Newton) and he actually rides out here once a week, doing two lots on a Saturday. But we certainly haven’t let him on Kauto Star yet!”
