One of Australia’s best maiden gallopers will on Saturday race in a maiden plate at Kyneton, having placed 4 times from 8 starts including a 3rd placing in the McKenzie Stakes at Moonee Valley in August last year.
Sunquest a 3-year-old by Helmet will enjoy a dramatic drop in class, running 9th of 14 in his most recent start in listed grade at Flemington, after three times placing in consecutive runs at Monee Valley and Caulfield.
Seemingly crying out for more distance each run with lightning finishes, the Steve Richards trained galloper has been tried at 1000, 1200, 1300, 1500, 1600 and 1800m with limited success however tomorrow’s 1200m trip should be no issue for the 8-start maiden, showing good potential in sprint races to date.
A real sectional star, Sunquest has recorded exceptional late splits in almost every run to date, clocking a best time of 33.04 for the final 600m in a run over 1000m at Flemington. The colt has been equally impressive over 1200 and 1300m as well, perhaps getting a little too far back in runs at Sandown and, still breaking the 34-second barrier with an average late speed of 61.52 kp/h in all races.
Sunquest’s best final 600 of 33.04 is far superior to anything else in the field over similar distance, with the 3-year-old looking a very good chance to chalk up his first win if everything goes to plan. Sunquest has drawn barrier 13 with Daniel Moor to ride.
