I Wish I Win shifts focus to middle-distance races

Dual Group 1 winner I Wish I Win has signalled his readiness for an autumn campaign, impressing in a jumpout at Pakenham on Tuesday. The six-year-old gelding, who has previously excelled over sprint distances, is now set to target races around 1400m this preparation.

Trainer Katherine Coleman was pleased with his performance, stating, “Couldn’t have asked for any more, he was just out there for a soft trial today.” Jockey Jamie Melham was instructed to keep I Wish I Win on the bridle, with Coleman adding, “We just instructed Jamie to keep him on the bridle and not really ask him to round it out – really pleased with how he finished it off and how he pulled up.”

I Wish I Win, who finished last in the 2023 G1 The Everest, has bounced back strongly after a well-deserved spell. “He had been up and going a while without having a proper spell for quite a while,” Coleman explained. “He’s really enjoyed that, he seems to have come back in really good order.”

The gelding is second favourite for the G1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, with Coleman adopting a flexible approach to his campaign. “Nothing is set in stone yet, we’re just going to let him guide us,” she said.
