3/5/2019 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Wagga, Wagga Cup day

The Wagga Carnival concludes on Friday with a bumper eight race card, highlighted by the Wagga Cup (2000m). The weather is fine, the track is heavy (10) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:25) Wagga RSL Club Maiden Plate 1200m

Back Me

15 Verdi (Bet Now: $9.00) is a son of So You Think for Kurt Goldman on debut. This bloke had two trials in the Spring before being tipped out. Trialled in late March at Goulburn and despite being pushed out, did respond well when second to the classy stablemate Eckstein. Liked the way he looked there and stable should always be respected when they bring runners to Wagga.

Danger

5 Pauper (Bet Now: $5.00) is a son of Exceed And Excel for the in for Natalie Jarvis stable that was kept relatively safe in betting when resuming at Moruya and I thought his effort in defeat was a beauty, sitting around midfield in the run before getting a touch held up, then getting clear late and launching to just miss. Bigger track, run under the belt, stable flying, has to be respected.

Long Shot

Up in trip would suit 2 Deganway (Bet Now: $51.00) better instead of remaining at 1200m, but I really liked his debut run and from the soft draw, he’ll do me. Debut run came on April 1 where he just got too far back out of his ground but made up good ground in an eye catching performance in a maiden which has produced a couple of winners. Hopefully can make use of the draw this time around.

Race 2. (13:00) Port Of Melbourne Handicap (Class 1) 1200m

5 Tyson Returns (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Strada three year old for Craig Widdison that resumes. This bloke had three runs to start his career in the Spring, with the highlight being a solid maiden win at Wodonga, a maiden which has produced three winners, so the form doesn’t read too bad. Given a quiet trial behind That Song at Tatura, but have to respect the stable when they cross the border.

Danger

12 Event (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Chris Heywood trained mare resuming. This girl hasn’t raced since March 1 at this track/distance where she had the suck run behind the speed and I thought she had her chance when fourth. Can sprint well fresh and likes racing at Wagga. No public trials under the belt, but has residual fitness and with a cold ride, she can be quite effective.

Long Shot

7 Funky Farm (Bet Now: $61.00) could be one to include in exotics. Resumed over 1175m at Albury where he had the suck run behind the speed but was under pressure on the turn and couldn’t really fire a shot when fifth to Elm Court. Did look to parade big that day, so should take improvement off that and 1200m should be fine. Not sure he wins, but one for multiples.

Race 3. (13:35) Toyota Material Handling Australia Handicap (Class 3) 1000m

Back Me

13 Wolfofpeterstreet (Bet Now: $12.00) might be worth a throw at the stumps here first up. Chris Heywood trains this mare, who has shown really good ability throughout her career but has only won the one race. Few things in her corner here are she’s good on wet ground, gets 52.5kg after the claim, goes well fresh and does like racing at Wagga. Tricky race, but happy to have something small on her.

Danger

8 Star Of The Clan (Bet Now: $2.70) is on the quick back up for the Nick Olive stable after resuming on her home track at Canberra on Anzac Day where she led at a pretty good tempo and gave a kick, but just felt the pinch late. Think she’ll take improvement from that run, has the speed to overcome the draw and hopefully will be stronger at the end of the race this time around.

Long Shot

5 Thistledo (Bet Now: $6.50) is a lightly raced six year old for David Blundell who was relatively unwanted in betting when resuming at Gundagai but after getting a fair way back in the run, he finished off well when third to Concrete, who next start won a Highway at Randwick, so that form reads well for this, and a fast run 1000m should be right up his alley. Definite chance.

Race 4. (14:10) Budget Truck Hire Handicap (58) 1300m

Back Me

Happy to speck 1 Trying (Bet Now: $17.00), resuming for Noel Gardner. This bloke is probably better suited over a bit further, but being by Not A Single Doubt, he should swim and his record says as much. Has won first up previously but I was really taken by his trial effort at Canberra. Beaten a fair way, but loved the way he poked through and made ground under no pressure. He’ll do me each way.

Danger

3 Kruanui (Bet Now: $4.40) has to be respected here for Chris Heywood. Track specialist and wet track specialist who comes here in winning form after winning over 1200m here last time out narrowly but impressively under a lovely steer from Josh Richards, who remains on. Just starting to creep up in the weights, and 1300m on a heavy track a query, but he does like a track with give in it and is in form.

Long Shot

4 Tag And Release (Bet Now: $10.00) is a son of Artie Schiller for Joe Cleary resuming. This bloke hasn’t raced since earlier in the year when down the track in the Narooma Cup behind Le Cavalier. Resumes without a public trial, but can sprint well fresh and first up on a big day like this, especially with the stable, I would suspect he’s ready to go fitness wise. Just watch the market though.

Race 5. (14:50) Queen Of The South (66) 1400m

Back Me

With this track now heavy, I’m going the way of the Chris Davis trained 13 Just Stellar (Bet Now: $5.50). She was well specked at longer odds last time out at Benalla and ran well. Just made to come off the bit a fair way out which isn’t her go, but kept finding and was good late when a close up third to Typhoon Rubi. With that tough 1400m run under the belt, should be better off here.

Danger

2 Lucky Helmet (Bet Now: $3.60) should be given another chance. Thought she was really good first up the above average filly Fasika before being ridden too close to the speed IMO last time out in a total forgive behind High Shine. I think from the barrier they will ride her cold, which does seem the best way to ride her, and off previous form, clearly hard to beat at this level.

Long Shot

9 Dottledo (Bet Now: $9.00) a threat for me. Geoff Duryea trains this mare, who resumed over 1400m at Albury where she had the good sit behind the speed and loomed to win, but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Liberty Boy. First up at 1400m was always going to be a difficult task, so with that run under the belt, she should be better off and has a good record at Wagga.

Race 6. (15:30) MTC Guineas (74) 1600m

Back Me

Does look a lovely race for the Gary Portelli trained 2 Perfect Pitch (Bet Now: $3.60). This filly was on speed last time out at Warwick Farm and gave a good kick when asked by Collett but had no answers for the finale produced by impressive winner High Shine. Was coming back in trip that afternoon so up to the mile, she appears well placed and is one of the hardest to beat.

Danger

3 D’Oro Rain (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Bjorn Baker trained filly who scored a pretty solid win two back at Gosford (Metro) before going to the Kensington track at Randwick where she ran along hard in front but almost pinched it when beaten narrowly by Cuban Sizzle. Looks the leader and if she can harness her energy a bit better in front, she’ll be hard to beat here I’m sure.

Long Shot

6 Mookareena (Bet Now: $10.00) is going really well at the moment for the Joseph/Jones team who is one of the better chances. Lovely rail hugging ride fro Bek Prest got this filly the win in the Prelude last time out where she used gate one to advantage, got the split and was too good. The 1600m is the query with her, and been up a fair while, but continues to race well.

Race 7. (16:10) Wagga Cup 2000m

Back Me

Chris Waller rarely gets it wrong when he brings a horse here for the Cup and being by locals, 4 Abdon (Bet Now: $3.50) has to be respected. Tempo was clearly against him last time out in the JRA Plate at Randwick but I thought he was really good in defeat behind Grey Lion. Should get a good speed in front this time around, down in the weights, very hard to beat.

Danger

12 High Opinion (Bet Now: $8.00) is a locally owned horse who appears well placed in the Cup. Kris Lees has had this bloke for a couple of preps and the couple of runs in Queensland has really sparked him, both runs resulting in unlucky placings in races which have produced subsequent winners, so the form has been ticked off, good record here and will be strong late.

Long Shot

6 Dark Eyes (Bet Now: $10.00) is a former WaterBott runner who has had a couple of runs now for Matty Dale and comes here in winning form off the back of a win over 1700m on Anzac Day at Flemington where he landed some each way bets at longer odds, surging hard late to get the win. Think he’ll be better suited here at 2000m, has upside and is a definite knockout chance.

Race 8. (16:50) Walsh & Blair Handicap (66) 1200m

Back Me

I think old favourite 13 Hangin With Willy (Bet Now: $18.00) can run a race at odds here in the get out. Trevor Sutherland trains this veteran, who is working up to a win I reckon. Thought there was merit in his second up effort at Albury when back, never really in the hunt but did make ground in an encouraging run. Does no work from the draw, handles a wet track…worth a throw at the stumps in the last.

Danger

1 Rafha’s Choice (Bet Now: $2.30) has to carry the grandstand but does have class on his side and that will carry him a long way. Really well backed when resuming at Kembla where he was near the speed all the way and tried hard but I reckon condition just gave out late when third to Rockin’ Ruga. Drops a fair bit in depth, stable loves to target the Carnival and Tommy Berry steers.

Long Shot

2 Delivered (Bet Now: $7.00) is racing in really good form at the moment for Chris Heywood. Lumped 61.5kg to win here two back before contesting the Town Plate Prelude when back, wide with cover, and launching late to run a narrow second to Fermanagh Lad. He looks to have come back in really good order and the speed in front here should give him every chance to launch.
