Australian sprinting sensation Nature Strip will be spelled, following a busy year that saw him compete in high-profile races around the world, according to a statement by trainer Chris Waller.
βWe gave consideration towards taking him to Queensland, however after a very busy twelve months and the short amount of downtime he has had, it has been decided that he will spell,β said Waller.
The break will be the first proper rest for Nature Strip in a long time, with a 7-8 week break planned before a race-by-race preparation in the Spring.
βBy spelling him now, we have time to give him a 7-8 week break and this will be the first time he has had one of these breaks for a very long time,β said Waller.
βWe want to see how he is when he returns and if he doesnβt come up like we think he should, then we will give consideration to retirement.β
Despite the decision drawing some criticism, Waller emphasized that Nature Strip is still sound and interested in racing, and ran a credible 4th in the TJ Smith Stakes on a very heavy track.
βWe respect that people have different opinions and might not all agree with our decision but as far as the horse goes, he is sound, he is still showing us that he is interested,β said Waller.
βOn behalf of the owners and my staff, we certainly appreciate [Nature Stripβs following] and hope to see him return successfully in the Spring.β
