Gillon McLachlan emerges as top contender for Racing Victoria chair

Former AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan is reportedly the frontrunner to assume the role of the new chairman of Racing Victoria, according to several media outlets.

While no official confirmation of his acceptance has been made, sources suggest that McLachlan is the preferred candidate of Victoria’s Racing Minister, Anthony Carbines.

This speculation regarding McLachlan’s candidacy began circulating as early as August last year, and it appears that he has surpassed more than 10 other contenders for the position.

If McLachlan is appointed, he will find himself in a new competitive landscape, potentially going head-to-head with his former NRL counterpart, Peter V’landys.

Reports indicate that plans are well underway for the appointment of a new chairman to lead Racing Victoria’s board, with the aim of rejuvenating leadership within the industry.

With prominent figures like Mike Hirst and Greg Nichols set to step down, industry leaders have voiced their desire for a faster pace of change within Racing Victoria.

McLachlan’s extensive experience in sports administration, including securing major broadcast deals and effectively managing the AFL during the COVID-19 pandemic, makes him a compelling candidate for this prominent position.
