Licence revoked for high-profile Tasmanian trainer

High-profile Tasmanian trainer Scott Brunton has had his license officially revoked and will no longer be a licensed horse trainer as of September 8.

Brunton now has the uphill task of rehoming 100 horses from his Seven Mile Beach stable, following a ruling by the Office of Racing Integrity.

This isn’t your run-of-the-mill licence suspension; it comes on the heels of a Federal Court order last month to liquidate Brunton’s company for tax reasons.

While Brunton argues his debt to the Australian Taxation Office is $600,000, not the reported $1 million, Director of Racing Justin Helmich suggests that these financial challenges raise questions about his suitability to hold a licence.

Brunton, now without a staff but still responsible for the well-being of his four-legged athletes, is banking on family to save the day.

He’s optimistic that a new company, perhaps led by a family member, will take the reins and continue the legacy of Brunton Racing.
