James McDonald sets sights on Royal Ascot and Queensland Group 1s

James McDonald has outlined his upcoming schedule, which will see him compete in some of Australia’s top races before heading overseas.

The champion jockey will ride in Queensland’s prestigious Group 1 events in May and June, before returning to the UK for another appearance at the Royal Ascot meeting.

“Champions Day (Hong Kong) in two weeks, float around Brisbane for a little bit and hopefully end up at Royal Ascot with a runner or two,” McDonald said in an interview with RSN 927.

While McDonald has no plans to move to another racing jurisdiction, he is content with his current travel routine, which works well for both him and his young family.

“That’s the plan at the moment,” he said. “It’s all good, it’s working well at the moment. We’re still busy enough coming up, plenty to look forward to.”

The 33-year-old recently had a successful weekend at Randwick, securing a treble that included two Group 1 wins aboard Via Sistina in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Fangirl in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.
