At Gosford this afternoon, all those Portuguese punters will chuckle a fair bit.
A horse, trained by Kim Waugh, who should go very, very close to winning, called Safado will probably carry all their money.
Mainly because the word is familiar to them – it, Safado, means…Bastard in their language.
In some contexts, it means shameless and dirty, but mainly the b-word.
And I’m tipping it will be said quite a few times as this bloke can run. He bolted in on debut at maiden level then at his next start he made a dash late to just fail – beaten a neck by Resin.
Resin has gone on to win at Gr 3 level while Waugh’s tough big bay bastard…spelled.
He has since won a recent trial and can win race 2 today.
Incidentally, the word Safado was used in the United States too, when a Fusaichi Pegasus colt was named it, but as the name suggests, he was unloved, unwanted and unraced!
