Prolific winner Ta Ta Tatiana was a terrific race mare, the winner of 15 races over several seasons and it is little wonder that she is Queanbeyan trainer Joe Cleary’s favourite horse. The son of veteran trainer Frank, Joe took time out this week to answer our QUICK QUESTIONS…

What is your first racing memory?

Kingston Town and Malcolm Johnston. I was born in 1976 and I’ll never forget the 1982 Melbourne Cup.

Who is your favourite horse and why?

Ta Ta Tatiana. I was able to travel the eastern seaboard for three years with her. 15 wins; she was a beauty!

Who is the best horse you’ve been involved with?

Clan O’Sullivan.

And the best horse you have seen?

Winx.

Who do you admire most in racing?

My father Frank. Still training winners at 77 years of age.

Who is your ‘what if’ horse?

I was the underbidder on Absolutelyfabulous (over 20 years ago now). Kris Lees got her and she won over $850k.

What is one change/improvement you’d love to see in racing?

I’d love to see barrier trials after the last race in country NSW canned and just have a trial morning once a fortnight.

Which horse currently racing would you love to train?

Lindermann.

What’s the funniest moment you’ve experienced in racing?

I actually had to call the races one Boxing Day at Queanbeyan. Let’s say I wasn’t needed the following year!

What is your favourite racing moment/biggest thrill?

The 1999 Golden Slipper. Catbird was a huge result for our family, a country trained horse nailing the big guns.

What is your favourite pastime outside of racing?

Rugby League and the mighty Green Machine (Canberra Raiders).

What is your favourite T.V show?

Travel Guides.

Best concert you’ve seen?

Michael Buble. My wife Sharlene convinced me to go, and I was pleasantly surprised. He was fantastic.

What slogan summarizes your outlook on life?

Always look on the bright side of life.

Favourite food?

Love a Sunday roast in the depths of winter in Canberra.

Favourite racecourse?

Queanbeyan of course. It’s my playground.

If you weren’t a racehorse trainer what would you be doing?

Real estate. Away from the racetrack I’m a pretty nifty auctioneer!
