RACE ONE
Katalin got punters off to a great start at Rosehill despite getting the wobbles late in betting.
Coming into The Agency Real Estate Handicap (1200 metres), Katalin had been the ‘go to’ runner all week after TAB went up $3.60 on Wednesday. This morning, $2.10 was on the table with the Godolphin runner heavily tried.
Despite the support, the mare drifted out to $2.90 just minutes out from the jump before starting a $2.60 favourite.
Katalin, under Nash Rawiller, was responsible for a tick over 50 percent of the money and was 2.5 times as popular as anything else.

RACE TWO
Lord Ardmore caused the upset in the Fujitsu General Handicap (1900 metres).
Hovering around the $7 mark for most of the day, he was the lesser fancied of the Chris Waller trio which included the heavily tried Mightybeel ($1.95-$1.90).
The fav was the only one to hold six figures with TAB Fixed Odds and was responsible for 63 percent of the market.

RACE THREE
The Cody Morgan-trained Brave Enough burst through a gap late to finish strongly in the TAB Highway Handicap (1200 metres).
A gelded son of Street Boss, Brave Enough opened the day $1 but drifted to $14 but a late rally saw the five-year-old start $10.
Other than the late backing he was largely ignored by punters who were focused on Tejori ($6.50-$7-$5) and Bean Hot ($6.50-$4.40-$5.50) which had been $15 earlier in the week.

RACE FOUR
Kiss Sum proved to be a horror result for TAB when scooting through along the inside to take out The Four Pillars (1500 metres).
Tracey Bartley’s rep was actually the third most popular runner in terms of money taken behind Different Strokes and Daralina Belle ($6-$6.50).
Although attracting decent money, Kiss Sum ($11-$17-$15) was on the drift for a good portion of the afternoon.
Different Strokes ($3.70-$2.90-$3) went around with more money than most throughout the day, commanding half the total investment.
Of the others, Dufresne ($7.50-$5.50) had admirers and firmed.

Think It Over always seems to have support whenever it goes around and today was no different in the Kypreos Group Rosehill Gold Cup (2000 metres).
The Kerry Parker-trained galloper held half the market on his back and went around as a very popular $2.70 favourite despite getting out late in the betting. In the morning, TAB had the six-year-old assessed as a $2.30 pop.
Lions Roar ($6.50) and Sky Lab ($8) had admirers while Kukeracha ($19-$14) and Mirann ($26-$19) were specked at bigger prices.

RACE SIX
The big move for Eduardo paid off in the Classique Legend Stakes (1300 metres).
One of Joe Pride’s stable stars, Eduardo ($4.40-$3.10) had plenty of support throughout the afternoon to the point where it overtook Masked Crusader for favouritism.
Masked Crusader bottomed out at $2.40 yesterday and this morning was $2.50. Despite holding approximately 2.5 times what Eduardo did, TAB took on the Everest runner-up which saw the price inflated to $3.50 at the jump.
Lost And Running ($9.50-$6-$7.50) ran up to the support for it while Standout ($26-$21-$23) was specked at the price.

Im Thunderstruck was crunched late in the XXXX Golden Eagle (1500 metres).
The Victorian was backed from $4.20 into $3.40 in the final 10 minutes of betting, landing a sensational move.
Such was the support for Im Thunderstruck that it proved a disastrous result for TAB as he was the most popular galloper anywhere across the country in terms of money held.
Ellsberg ($8.50-$5.50) was a big mover throughout the day while Private Eye ($7) and Apache Chase ($7.50-$5.50) had plenty of admirers.

On The Lead had its share of support in the Ned Whisky Handicap (1100 metres).
Hovering around the $4.40-$4.60 quote for most of the day, On The Lead ended up third pick in the market behind Delexo and Fox Fighter ($4.40-$3.90).
Delexo ($2.60) was easily the best backed in the race though and was responsible for 58 percent of the money.

The 2021 Melbourne Cup Carnival got off to a dream start for favourite backers with Fangirl justifying some hefty support to win the Carbine Club Stakes. A $2.60 chance when the final field market opened on Wednesday, she touched $2.80 but was consistently supported across the final two days of betting, including a solid go on raceday to start $1.90. She was responsible for 58 percent of trade on the race, including bets multiple bets of at least $2000 at prices ranging from $1.90 to $2.50, the biggest being $500 at $2.40.

James McDonald and Chris Waller again combined to win with the favourite in Race 2, but it was in contrast to their win with heavily-backed Fangirl in the opening event. Great House started favourite, but only marginally in advance of Mankayan. The Hotham Stakes was a quiet betting affair until raceday, possible due to the uncertainty around Great House taking his place. He opened $2.70, hit $3.50 before a late trim to $3.40. Mankayan also drifted from his opening quote of $2.90 to start $3.60, while the long-odds mover King’s Charisma ($17 to $5.50) failed to flatter.

Willowy charged into VRC Oaks contention with a barnstorming win in the G2 Wakeful Stakes, landing a long-odds move in the process. The Godolphin filly opened $15 when the Wakeful market went up on Wednesday, hit a peak price of $16 before being backed down to $12 at the jump. Willowy went into the Wakeful a $17 chance in the Oaks, but was reposted the $6 second favourite and was into $4.50 within 15 minutes. Elusive Express remains Oaks favourite at $4. The Wakeful market underwent a severe shake-up in the three days leading up to the race with runner-up Daisies starting $6.50 after opening $3.90 equal favourite, while the other early equal favourite Yearning started $5.50. El Patroness, who opened $6, started $4.20 equal favourite with Barb Raider ($7 to $4.20) and was clearly the most popular runner, accounting for 30 percent of the market.

Justacanta caused an upset when he won the G2 TAB Not One Day Linlithgow Stakes at $16. The Patrick Payne-trained sprinter opened at $17 and had a low price of $15. Oxley Road was the horse they came for with the Peter Moody-trained galloper firming from $3.60 in the opening market (which had 11 cents worth of deductions) to $2.25 at one point before starting $2.70. The biggest bet on Oxley Road was $8000 at $2.25.

Tofane dominated the market on the TAB Empire Rose Stakes, but it was Colette who scored an upset win of sorts. A mark of Tofane’s dominance was that Colette was the second most popular horse with TAB in terms of hold but drifted from an opening quote of $6 to $11. Tofane, who opened $4 on Wednesday, was responsible for just under 24% of trade, resulting in a sharp firm to start $2.90. Runner-up Mystic Journey was $6 out to $7, while third placegetter Hungry Heart had specking at double-figure odds ($15 to $10).

RACE SIX – VIC DERBY
Hitotsu landed a Victoria Derby move when he won the Group 1 Classic as favourite. In a market that was dominated by Gunstock and Forgot You during the week, the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained stayer was the subject a strong raceday move to start $4. Hitotsu, who entered TAB’s Pre-Nominations market as a $26 chance in mid-September, was an $8 chance when the Final Field market went up on Tuesday and hit a peak price of $9 during the week. Runner-up Alegron was also a $9 chance during the week, but started $5.50 third elect. Gunstock ($4 to $4.80) and Forgot You ($3.50 to $6) both spent most of the week at the head of the market and although replaced as favourite, they were still the two most popular runners with TAB with Gunstock responsible for 21 percent of trade and Forgot You just under 18 percent.

There were some notable failures in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, but Home Affairs wasn’t one of them, ensuring a spot at the race sponsor’s stud with a dominant win as a well-backed $5.50 joint second elect. The son of I Am Invincible was a $10 chance when the Final Field market went up but was the subject of consistent support all week. Ten percent of the money wagered on the race was on Home Affairs with Extreme Warrior ($4.40 to $3.50, 10th) and Paulele ($6 out to $7 in to $5.50, 12th) clearly the most popular at 20 percent each. In The Congo, who opened $5.50, got to $4.80 but was soft on raceday, starting $6.50, finished last.

Just inches separated the first handful over the line in the Cantala Stakes and it was Superstorm backers – and there were plenty of them – who rejoiced. The Danny O’Brien-trained gelding opened $11 in the Final Field market and got as low as $7.50 before starting $8. He held off Icebath, who was also well-backed, $10 in to $6.50, and the easy Cascadian ($8 out to $13). Mr Brightside, who started $5 favourite after drifting from his opening price of $4.20 was close up in fourth. Chaillot ($9.50 in to $5.50 back out to $7.50) and Aramayo ($10 to $6.50) were the well-supported runners who failed to figure.

James McDonald capped an unforgettable day with a fourth Derby Day winner aboard Minhaaj in the Furphy Sprint and the punters celebrated. While September Run was responsible for a marginally greater hold on the race – 24 percent to 20 percent – Minhaaj was heavily-backed late. After battling it out for favouritism with September Run for most of the day, Minhaaj was crunched in the final 10 minutes of betting to start a clear $3.70 favourite. September Run ended betting the $6 second elect.
