The SA Carnival warms up this Saturday at Morphettville where it is Lord Reims Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out eight metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out four metres for the remainder.

Lord Reims Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Lord Reims Stakes
Race 1. (12:47) Furphy (Bm86) 1600m
4 Thrill Kill (Bet Now: $SP.00) on top. Peter Hardacre trains this guy, who has had recent racing at 2000m, the latest coming in the Naracoorte Cup when a solid third to Master Of Zerprise, perhaps just finding the ten furlongs a bridge too far. Like him back to the mile and I’d love to see Murray be positive early, ideally sitting in the first four, and he will be strong at the end.
2 Blazerro (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one of the key chances. Phillip Stokes trained gelding that ran in the En Francais race from a fortnight back where he was leading and copped heat in front. Was entitled to knock right up but actually battled on pretty well in defeat to finish fourth. If he gets a cheap run on speed, I think he’ll run well again and the win the start prior was dominant.
8 Disagreeable Miss (Bet Now: $SP.00) should be suited back to the mile for Mick Huxtable. Several weeks between runs since racing over 2100m at Gawler where she just couldn’t get involved from the back in what was essentially a barrier trial behind Bundle Of Fun, so forgive and forget the run. That horse came out and won the Strathalbyn Cup next start so the form has been ticked off and she’ll be strong late.
Race 2. (13:22) Fleurieu Milk Company (Bm86) 1100m
6 Philonize (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks ready to rock and roll fresh. Dion Koch trained mare that was 2/2 when last in work in the Spring, each time producing sustained speed from the outset and proving much too good, looking a Stakes class mare. I reckon she wins this and then the stable will have eyes on a race like the Matrice on Adelaide Cup Day. Jumpout win was sharp, she’s clearly the one to beat.
7 Kiki Express (Bet Now:Â $SP.00) is a daughter of Sepoy resuming for Travis Doudle. Rewind 12 months this day, she was running in the Blue Diamond so the wheels have somewhat fallen off from then but she is well placed in SA. Ended last prep on a high when winning the Rebel Raider Final, sitting off the speed and finishing best. Not sure she beats Philonize but runs well regardless.
3 Another Award (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Macdonald/Gluyas trained mare that resumes. This mare hasn’t raced since the Spring when down the track in the Summoned during the Melbourne Spring behind My Whisper. Her recent jumpout was encouraging to my eye and in terms of class/quality, she has a bit on these, so keen to see how she resumes.
Race 3. (13:57) Quayclean Mdn Plate 1100m
9 Party Princess (Bet Now: $SP.00) is better suited over a bit further, but in terms of quality, she looks hard to beat in a race like this. She had a three run prep in the Winter to start her career, the latest effort being over 1400m on the Parks track here when a narrow third to Anphina. Her recent jumpout work suggests she has come back in really good order and this maiden isn’t overly strong to my eye.
8 Cararada (Bet Now:Â $SP.00) is knocking on the door. Three weeks between runs since contesting a maiden on the Parks track where she did work from the wide gate and was very green in the straight, potentially costing herself the win when second to Kushan Khanivale. If she can do everything right, she finds a maiden where it is well within her reach.
4 Pinchbeck (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one I could entertain for wider multiples. David Aldridge trained gelding that resumed over 1200m at Gawler where he attempted to lead throughout and gave a pretty strong kick under Metcalfe but couldn’t quite finish it off, run down late by Thirsty Guest. Better for the run under the belt and I actually think back to 1100m is a positive for him.
Race 4. (14:32) Tab Adelaide Cup Day 13/3-Bm64 2000m
5 Santelmo Fuego (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one of the hardest to beat. Had good specking at a price when resuming at Strathalbyn, finding the line nicely late when third to Famous Prince. He then went to the mile here where he got back in the run and was good late without threatening behind En Francais. He’s come back in really good order to my eye and I do think he finds a winnable race.
7 Malinong Club (Bet Now:Â $SP.00) commands respect. Progressive mare that put together a couple of wins before going to the Premiers Plate where she was outclassed but far from disgraced in defeat behind Farooq in a good effort. The question will be whether that run will be the making of her or whether it busts her. Either way, that form clearly has to be respected for a race like this.
10 Classic Holly (Bet Now:Â $SP.00) has put it together in recent times for Sam Burford, looking to make it three wins on the bounce here. Latest win came over 1800m here two weeks where she was on speed throughout and credit to her, she was there to be beaten but found under pressure to fend them off and win. She does seem a one paced type who will keep finding so 2000m is fine and is one of the main contenders.
Race 5. (15:12) Pike & Joyce (Bm60) 1600m
11 More Sugar (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a mare I do have time for. She ran a fortnight back in the Classic Holly race and I thought she did a good job. She spotted them a decent head start and tried to make a sustained run but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Classic Holly. That should toughen her up for this 1600m race and with a more positive ride, I think she can be quite dangerous.
3 Tanaawol (Bet Now: $SP.00) is another great example of Michael Hickmott improving a tried horse. This horse was a battling 58 class horse when in Victoria. Sent to Hickmott, resumed at Saturday metro level at Gawler a few weeks ago and the end result was a dominant win over 1500m, defying a notable late betting drift. Fitter, up in trip, natural improvement, see no reason why he can’t win again.
9 Silent Don (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks to have returned well and should appreciate a truly run 1600m. Resumed several weeks ago on the course proper here where he was back near last in the run and while he was never really a threat, I didn’t mind the way he finished his race off behind Versetto, beaten just over three lengths in a good return. Tick over trial was solid enough and is a second up winner, so he has the set up to go close.
Race 6. (15:52) Grand Syndicates (Bm60) 1200m
1 Kenyan Wonder (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door to win for Ryan Balfour. She ran over this track/distance two weeks ago where she got a fair way back in the run and despite never really being a winning threat, I liked the way she finished her race off when third to Victorian raider Bellinger. She can settle closer in the run if need be and should that eventuate, she’ll take beating I’d suggest.
6 Lake Titicaca (Bet Now: $SP.00) creates interest. Clarken/O’Shea trained mare that resumes, having not raced since breaking the maiden tag over 1700m at Gawler on October 21 where she looked a moral on paper and duly saluted, spanking them. Two trials and a jumpout under the belt to get ready, so she’s got the fitness base and grounding to run well fresh. Watch the market.
8 Storm Voyager (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a mare who is dangerous in races like this. Her recent runs have come at metro level, the latest being here a fortnight back when off the speed and kept finding the line with real purpose late in the piece when second to Endlessly. She’s racing like 1200m will be ideal and back to Mares grade, she rates as one of the hardest to beat.
Race 7. (16:32) Glen Dorol's 50Th B'day (Bm68) 1050m
1 Hongbao (Bet Now: $SP.00) has done a super job since joining David Jolly. He ran over 1050m here two weeks ago where he got into a lovely spot just off the speed. Just a matter of Vorster getting clear air and pushing the button. Once that eventuated, away he went and he spanked them in a good effort. Harder here, but he’s the hard fit/in form horse that will be strong late.
3 Jean Valjean (Bet Now: $SP.00) on top in what looks a very winnable race for him. Clarken/O’Shea trained gelding that was well tried in betting a few weeks ago over 1000m at The Valley where he just got lost on the turn but balanced up in the straight and motored late when second to Mamaragan. That was his first run in a month so you’d like to think there is good improvement to come and back to this level, he’ll be around the mark.
5 Jaazeb (Bet Now: $SP.00) has been up a little while but is holding his form really well. He ran over 1050m here a fortnight back when near the speed throughout and tried his guts out but couldn’t quite finish it off, proving no match late for a pretty solid animal in Hongbao. The extra 50m should be fine and with a more conservative steer, he’ll be dangerous against these.
Race 8. (17:12) Lord Reims Stakes 2600m
1 Grand Promenade (Bet Now: $SP.00) has plenty on these with his absolute best. He resumed three weeks ago over 1800m at Sandown and I thought did more than enough for a 2400m+ horse when fourth to stablemate Right You Are, beaten six lengths in a pass mark. Fitter and up in trip, with class on his side he’s going to take a power of beating I’d suggest with natural improvement.
14 The Map (Bet Now:Â $SP.00) has eyes on the Adelaide Cup, like most engaged here, and I think she is ticking along beautifully towards it. She ran two weeks ago in the Premiers Plate and was a bit one paced in the straight but the last 100m and through the line, she was very good when a close up fifth to Farooq. Bolted up over 2500m here in the Spring so 2600m is fine and looks spot on.
5 Sebonna (Bet Now:Â $SP.00) is another that I think is ticking along nicely towards the Adelaide Cup. This mare was second up when contesting the Premiers Plate and while she was never a threat, I really liked the way she found the line late behind Farooq, looking like a mare that wants more ground, which is what she gets here, and has won at 2500m so the 2600m here should be okay and is a mare with good upside.
Race 9. (17:50) Skycity (Bm60) 1200m
3 Bamyan Buddha (Bet Now: $SP.00) is worth an each way ticket in the get out. He ran over 1100m here two weeks ago where he was just run off his legs early and did make up late ground but was never really a threat behind Endlessly. Fab track/distance record and he does get in really well after the claim for Rawiller. With luck from the tricky gate, I think he’ll only run well.
11 Master At Arms (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one of the hardest to beat I’d suggest. Stuart Gower trained gelding that broke the maiden tag in style two back at Murray Bridge before racing here two weeks ago and was good late from off the speed when fourth to a very much in form mare, Endlessly. Back to just against the boys and back a bit in overall depth, he rates as one of the main contenders.
1 Montepulciano (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a son of All Too Hard for Team Jolly that resumes. He hasn’t raced since October 29 over the mile here where he was wide no cover for the trip and the hard run told, finishing down the track behind Residue, who was flying at the time, so the form reads well. Not a noted fresh horse, but this isn’t a strong race and stable can get them ready fresh, so watch the market.
