Weld begins Galway festival with treble

Dermot Weld has continued his domination of the Galway festival with three winners on the first day as he bids to take training honours for the 26th time.

Jane Mangan made history on one of Weld’s winners, Midnight Music, when she became the first female rider to win the 70,000 euro ($A82,693) handicap for amateur riders.

A daughter of Dubawi, the four-year-old looked to have plenty to do but passed several horses in the short straight to win going away by 2-3/4 lengths.

β€œIt was a lovely ride,” Weld said.

β€œWe had a worry whether the filly would stay two miles (3200m).

β€œNow that we see she can win over this distance it opens lots of options and we may even get her stakes placed over this trip later in the season.”

Weld also landed the Novices’ Hurdle with Train Of Thought and a maiden with Thunder Mountain.
