Oisin Murphy wins German 2000 Guineas

Young jockey Oisin Murphy has won his first Classic aboard Karpino in the German 2000 Guineas for Melbourne Cup winning trainer Andreas Wohler and Pearl Bloodstock.

The 19-year-old burst into the spotlight in September 2013 when he rode four winners in an afternoon including the Ayr Gold Cup.

He subsequently spent the northern hemisphere winter riding in Australia before returning to Britain to secure the champion apprentice title last year.

He then joined Qatar Racing and Pearl Bloodstock, along with Andrea Atzeni, as a retained rider.

The 19-year-old steered the unbeaten Karpino to a dominant win at Cologne with the colt now heading to the German Derby.

β€œIt’s most likely the German Derby will now be next on his program but he is entered in every big race,” Wohler told the Racing Post.

β€œHe definitely stays and all the big mile-and-a-half (2400m) races will be options.”

RaceBets introduced Karpino at 10-1 for the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

But he would need to be put in as a late entry and the owners’ racing manager David Redvers said that was unlikely.

β€œA decision on where he will go next will made by Andreas and Sheikh Fahad over the next week,” he said.
