Champion jockey Frankie Dettori has been handed a suspension that will prevent him from taking part in the coveted Melbourne Cup.

This is a pivotal race that the illustrious jockey has yet to add to his extensive CV.

The suspension, spanning 16 days, is a result of Dettori exceeding the whip limit on two separate occasions during the British Champions Day.

On Trawlerman during the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup, and earlier on Kinross in the Champions Sprint, Dettori used his whip more than the permissible limit.

Consequently, the suspension runs from November 7 to November 24, coincidentally rendering him unavailable for the Melbourne Cup 2023, which is scheduled for the first day of his suspension.

“Regretfully at British Champions Day I went one stroke over in the opening and subsequent race.” Dettori said.

“Following the whip review committee meeting early this week, my 16-day suspension will take effect from Tuesday, November 7, meaning I am unable to ride at the Melbourne Cup carnival.”

Despite the setback, Dettori remains optimistic.

“With flights booked, I still plan to attend Australia’s premier meeting to support the event.” Dettori expressed.
