Stewards conclude inquiry into fall that left apprentice Tom Prebble seriously injured

Smokin' Princess, (Tom Prebble, Trainers; Patrick and Michelle Payne), wins the Jockey Acknowledgement Plate, at Flemington 11 January, 2025.

Racing Victoria stewards have finalised their investigation into the September fall that left apprentice jockey Tom Prebble with a severe spinal cord injury.

Prebble remains in rehabilitation after losing all sensation in his lower body when he fell from the Andrew Bobbin-trained Pulveriser during a race at Warrnambool. The incident occurred at the 700-metre mark when the gelding knuckled and the young rider was thrown heavily to the turf.

As part of their inquiry, stewards inspected the Warrnambool track surface and interviewed jockeys Jake Noonan, Jarrod Fry and Jordyn Weatherley โ€” the riders positioned closest to Prebble at the time of the fall.

Pulveriserโ€™s veterinary history was also examined, with trainer Andrew Bobbin confirming the horse had shown no soundness issues or abnormalities leading into the race.

The stewards ultimately found no evidence that rider error, track conditions or any pre-existing condition in Pulveriser contributed to the fall.

Prebble, one of Victoriaโ€™s most promising apprentices, continues his long-term rehabilitation as the racing community rallies around him.
