Satin Summer too smooth for Randwick rivals

Michael Freedman continues to strengthen his juvenile hand with Satin Summer making an auspicious debut at Randwick, outpacing her rivals to earn a shot at black type company.

By Written Tycoon, the filly is a daughter of 2011 Silver Slipper winner Satin Shoes and a homebred for Belinda Bateman.

She gave Freedman his second Sydney two-year-old winner in as many weeks following Outspan’s victory at Rosehill last Saturday, and the Randwick trainer was keen to give her a chance at emulating her dam by claiming a stakes race at two.

“I think she is a filly going places,” Freedman said.

“Obviously, we’d be keen to try to get some black type somewhere.

“As long as she pulls up alright we’ll have a think about it, but one of those fillies races (in Sydney) might be a nice option or going to Melbourne for one of the fillies’ Blue Diamond Preludes in two weeks’ time.”

Ridden by Tommy Berry, Satin Summer ($6) mustered quickly from the gates to scoot to the lead and kicked strongly in the straight to hold Zambales ($3.60 fav) at bay by 1-1/2 lengths with Ciaron’s Star ($7.50) finding the line nicely for third, another three-quarters of a length away.

Freedman is adamant she will be better again when ridden behind the speed and says she has shown above-average ability since beginning her education.

“It wasn’t the plan to lead on her today. I’ve always felt she was a filly that would enjoy having something to follow but the way things panned out, Tommy took the initiative, and she skipped away,” he said.

“To be fair, (respected horse breaker) Matt Vella had her in pre-training a while back and said to me, ‘she’s a sharp filly’. She has done nothing but please us since she has been in.”

Freedman also has Breeders’ Plate winner and early Golden Slipper favourite Incognito, who is due to resume in next weekend’s Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill.
