Mathew Ellerton, who has been appointed the new trainer for the Kennedy Racing stable, will have his first runner for the Kennedy team at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day when Zakat, a six-year-old Lonhro gelding, goes out to face the starter in race eight on the card.
The Ellerton/Kennedy partnership came about following the decision of Caroline Jennings, the Kennedy stable’s previous private trainer, to step away from that position.
It has been reported on Racing.com that apart from now managing the Kennedy team of horses, Ellerton will also continue to train the horses that were already in his care.
Zakat, who has finished in second and fourth place in his two starts in the Kennedy colours after transferring from the Godolphin stables to Caroline Jennings, is currently rated a $21 chance. Jordan Childs will be in the saddle.
Ellerton has a host of big race successes behind his name, not least including the Golden Slipper with Crystal Lily when he trained in partnership with Simon Zahra.
