Hawk Island has produced a good Sydney Cup trial with his win in the Listed JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick today.
Hawk Island ($3.70 fav) had the equal topweight of 61kg but he carried it to a narrow victory over boom mare Galizani ($5).
Vintedge ($9) was third.
The imported son of Hawk Wing will now back up in next Saturday’s Sydney Cup (3200m), where he will drop to 54.5kg.
The runner-up Galizani is headed to Brisbane.
