Group 1 winner returns positive swab

Racing Victoria stewards are investigating a positive swab from Group 1-winning mare Prowess, the racehorse trained by Roger James and Robert Wellwood.

The swab, taken prior to the Group 1 Champions Stakes at Flemington last November, revealed the presence of Phenylbutazone, Oxyphenbutazone, and Gamma-hydroxyphenylbutazone, substances prohibited on race day.

The detection was confirmed by both Racing Analytical Services Limited and the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory.

Prowess finished sixth in the race, and stewards notified the trainers of the irregularity in December, with confirmatory findings disclosed recently.

Racing Victoria continues its investigation into the matter.
