Passing of Sydney racing stalwarts

Sydney racing is mourning the loss of two of its stalwarts, Les Bridge Snr and Harry Barrett.

Bridge, the father of Melbourne Cup winning trainer Les Bridge, was a former trustee of Randwick Racecourse while bookmaker Barrett was famous for his battles with the late Kerry Packer.

Barrett had been absent from his racetrack stand for the past few weeks due to illness`.

The breeding world also lost one of its stellar contributors last week with the death of Major James Mitchell.

Mitchell bought Yarraman Park from champion jockey George Moore in 1968 and turned it into one of the leading Hunter Valley nurseries.

The stud is now run by his sons Arthur and Harry while their brother Bill, a former trainer, is also in the bloodstock business.
