SA Derby 2026 – Tips, Field, Betting, Odds and Horse Previews

The feature race at Morphettville this Saturday is the SA Derby (2500m), a key staying test for three-year-olds that shapes as a fascinating and open contest despite the market gravitating towards the emergencies.

Below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2026 SA Derby.

2026 SA Derby Runner Preview:

1. Single Choice: Somewhat overlooked in betting given he did win the Galilee and yes, pattern was in his corner, but even allowing for that, he was impressive and the trip is no issue. He’s in the mix.

2. Impulsive Reaction: Gave them a start and a beating to win the Chairmans but think he was given a 12/10 ride there and just not sold on him at 2500m.

3. Kaye Jay: Did a really good job in the Australian Derby and a tick over jumpout win was impressive. Tricky draw but commands respect.

4. Autumn Mystery: He’d be nearly top seed if he brought his best, but the jury is out on how well he’s going.

5. Savisanta: Down the track in the Australian Derby and for mine is not going well enough.

6. Geneva: Good, tough on speed win last time but the NZ boys have proven to be awful when coming to Australia so he goes through to the keeper.

7. Amazake: Amazake steps up to 2500m for Ciaron Maher after racing over 2400m in the Galilee Final and I think you can easily make a case that he wins with clear air. Instead, it ended up being a nightmare watch so forgive and forget. Hard to beat if he gets room to move here.

8. Engine Of War: Engine Of War was a real eye catcher in the Chairmans last Saturday. Got back to near last, he was never a winning threat but I did like the way he closed his race off, seemingly with this race in mind. You’d like a more positive ride, can settle closer and be effective late.

9. Flying Brant: Led and stuck on well in the Chairmans but I have a few others ahead of him.

10. Arabian Prince: Arabian Prince will love getting to 2500m. Just thought he was in the inferior lanes in the Galilee Final but liked the way he kept chasing and finding the line in defeat behind Single Choice. He should eat up the extra 100m, bigger track, firmer deck…hard to beat.

11. Cannae: Cannae ran third in the Port Adelaide Guineas three weeks back behind McWoody. He made a sustained run from off speed and tried hard in defeat when third, but overall, thought he had his chance. He’ll run well again.

12. Wigmore: Just fair in the Chairmans. Pass.

13. Strictly Business: Post the VRC Oaks win, some were saying this could be the best stayer in Australia. Fast forward to now, she’d be better suited in a jumps race at Warrnambool.

14. After Summer: Brings the strong Sydney form and despite the wide gate, she has to be one of the top seeds and is a clear threat.

15. Silvasista: Jogged up in the St Leger last Saturday and the seven day back up has proven to be successful previously. Commands respect.

16. Kazaru: Was good late in the Oaks last Saturday and the extra 500m suits. One for exotics.

17. Accidental Bid (First Emergency): SCR

18. Lunar Force (Second Emergency): SCR

19. Shotaro (Third Emergency): SCR

20. Borchard (Fourth Emergency): SCR

2026 SA Derby Speed Map

Can’t really see much front end pressure here. I think Single Choice will lead, perhaps, from Geneva. Savisanta could get a dig in the ribs from the wide gate, and in turn, maybe give the drag across to After Summer, but I don’t think they’ll go hard.
