The feature race at Moonee Valley this Saturday is the Carlyon Stakes (1000m), which is the key lead up to the Moir Stakes.

2025 Carlyon Stakes Runner Preview:
1. Mornington Glory: I don’t think the race suited him first up re race shape but even allowing for that, he was quite plain and not sure he is going well enough to trouble these.
2. Baraqiel: Baraqiel is a Corstens/Larkin trained gelding that resumes. He is first up, and he does look a horse that has very good talent…potentially Group l talent, but it is a make or break prep. Jumpout work has been strong and he does have a touch of class on his side.
3. Golden Boom: Golden Boom, I think, is ready to rock and roll for a crack at the Moir. He resumes for Tony Gollan, having not raced since the Oakleigh Plate when doing far too much work on speed and tired late. Been given a good break and his trial work in Brisbane has been very sharp. Keen to see how he goes.
4. Midwest: Midwest will land on speed and take running down, as seen two weeks back here. He attempted to lead throughout and gave a strong kick from the front but just felt the pinch late, having no answers for Oak Hill. Good racing style, he’s in the mix.
5. Oak Hill: Oak Hill can put his hand up well and truly for the Moir with another big performance, like he did when a first up track/distance winner two weeks ago, getting better as the race went on to win impressively. He’ll spot them a start once again but should launch late.
6. Don’t Hope Do: Got favours on speed when a first up winner here but Deepfloat Diva should have won…what price that horse here? Pass for me.
7. Tiger Shark: Didn’t do a bad job fresh behind Oak Hill but the map looks horrendous and she’ll need an all time ride from Currie to win.
8. New York Lustre: They’ve tried her at WFA over 1100m/1200m and there is enough body of work to say no, that isn’t her go. 1000m is her go at this level, and 1100m against Mares only. This looks a race well within reach if she has petrol left in the tank.
9. Dreamzel: Another unlucky runner behind Don’t Hope Do after settling near last and can settle closer…but just doesn’t have the class.
