Aurie’s Star Handicap Summary:
Boomtown Boss announced himself as a spring sprinting prospect with a tough first-up victory in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday.
Prepared by Tony Gollan and ridden by Daniel Moor, the Queensland raider settled just behind the speed before producing a sustained finishing burst down the famous Flemington straight. He wore down the brave Royal Insignia over the closing stages to score at $13, giving Gollan another success in the race after Temple Of Boom’s victory in 2011.
Royal Insignia lost no admirers in defeat, sticking on gamely after travelling prominently throughout, while favourite Arkansaw Kid worked home into third. Stablemate Ndola finished fourth after also making late ground.
The victory provided Boomtown Boss with a deserved breakthrough after an unlucky Queensland winter campaign and shapes as an ideal launching pad for a Melbourne spring preparation.
