Nine runners line up for the first Listed race of the day in what is a great day’s racing at Caulfield. View our full race preview including tips and selections.

Vain Stakes (Listed) – 1100m

Caulfield – 18th August 2012

1. UNDERESTIMATION – S Arnold (9)

Dean Lawson’s colt returns to racing after spell of 16 weeks. The son of Al Samer has had five starts today with two wins to his name including the Listed Anzac Day Handicap (1400m). First up last prep he was well accounted for over a 1000m when racing at the tail of the field. He’s best runs to date have come when sitting up on the speed and may very well have to do some work here from the widest draw if wanting to race in that manner.

Odds: $7.50

2. THE TRAVELLING MAN – B Melham (1)

Won the Blue Diamond Preview first up last prep over this track and distance on a Good track when leading all the way. After failing to re-produce that effort in the Blue Diamond a fortnight later (6th, beaten 9.7), the colt by Mossman was immediately spelled. He returned from that spell as a 9/4 favourite and finished a tiring third on a Slow track. Has drawn ideally in gate one.

Odds: $4.20

3. CHEYENNE WARRIOR – D Moor (4)

Gelding by Not a Single Doubt who won on debut over 900m at Sandown in February of this year before being taken to Tasmania to win the Listed Golden Sovereign. Immediately spelled, trainer Anthony Freedman hasn’t produced him at any public trials leading into this event. Can’t do any more than win and from four will get every chance, but will have had to have improved over the break.

Odds: $8.50

4. GENERAL RIPPA – M Walker (5)

Won the Blue Diamond Prelude for Colts and Geldings in good style when making his debut earlier this year. He was easily accounted for in the Blue Diamond proper and immediately spelled. His return was not an encouraging one here three weeks back, finishing last (beaten 12.2) on a Slow track. A significant turn-around in form and presumably the weather and track condition would be required.

Odds: $31.00

5. PLANET VOYAGE – L Nolen (2)

Lining up for his fifth run in this prep, the Moody trained Exceed and Excel gelding will definitely have fitness on his side. He has won two of four this time in and at his most recent was third (beaten 1.8) on a Slow track at Moonee Valley when carrying 58kgs. Drawn to take advantage of his speed, he’s also demonstrated a liking for soft tracks and will be in a position to make his presence felt.

Odds: $4.20

6. PHYCHIC MICK – C Symons (6)

Adelaide visitor that has been unbeaten in his three starts to date. Hasn’t raced since winning a Restricted 75 event at Morphetville back in June but has been readied for his crack at this Black Type race with solid barrier trial hitout, which he won by 3 1/4. Hasn’t been tested on any worse than Dead but breeding suggests, he may handle it.

Odds: $3.80

7. FREE OF DOUBT – S King (8)

Colt trained by Mornington trainer Jason Petch who has had only the two starts to date. His debut (fourth in a Kilmore Maiden in Feb) and recently, a close second (beaten a half length) at Moonee Valley when camped on the spped. Another that will have an awkward draw to contend with should he wish to go forward.

Odds: $9.00

8. ADJUSTER – J Maskiell (7)

We haven’t seen this colt by Purrealist since finishing fifth (beaten 3.3) in the Listed Chairman’s Handicap here at Caulfield in February. He started 100/1 that day and since no trial form is available for his return, the last run is the only one to go. Will be happy to watch him go around first up.

Odds: $21.00

9. STARCHINE – G Boss (3)

Was sent out a short price favourite on debut (9/4) in December last year but failed to make an impression finishing seventh of eight. Hasn’t bee produced since nor at the trials. Obviously showed something to start as short as he did on debut and from a yard that has had a good record with the juveniles. Boss rides and from a good gate, can see the Stratum colt getting a good run just off the pace. Creates some interest.

Odds: $26.00

OVERVIEW:

Tough to line this lot up with limited exposed form. Sticking with the safe combination of Moody/Nolen and Planet Voyage ($4.20). He is fit, likes the track conditions and from an inside draw, should get every chance. Expect The Travelling Man ($4.20) to be fitter after his first up run. May be worth monitoring Starchine’s ($26.00) price. Boss/Price and the prospect of a cushy run in transit are appealing factors.
