Tough betting race here with only three of the twelve runners entered, having won or ran a place at their most recent outing. Early favourites are Darley representative Raspberries ($4.00) and strong last start winner, albeit in restricted grade, Mahisara.

1. OVER QUOTA – P Mertens (5)
Resumed from a six month spell three starts back with an fantastic fourth to Fawkner in the Listed Tavern Stakes and backed that up with a second placing in the Seymour Cup behind the unbeaten Callanish. Last start the 7yo held a good spot throughout but was no match for Sertorius (won last Saturday) in the Sale Cup, three weeks ago when giving him 5.5kgs. Drawn to get a lovely run and has been very consistent.
2. RASPBERRIES – K McEvoy (3)
She ran well first up in the Blazer Stakes (1400m) behind Mosheen and then draw wide and got back in G2 Tristarc Stakes – a race dominated by runners on pace. Last start she contested the G1 Myer Classic and finished a length from the winner. Takes on the boys here and does have a decent weight of 58.5kgs (up 1.5 on last start) but should get lovely run from her gate and three from three over this trip.
3. VEEWAP – B Shinn (12)
A 7yo who, despite lining up for start number forty-five, has never gone better. He won at Caulfield three starts back accounting for Testacana before running third in the Listed Weekend Hussler (1400m), beaten 1 ¾ and last start, chased home Sertorius in the Sale Cup finishing fifth, beaten 2 ¾ Has drawn the widest gate here unfortunately but is going well and sure to be hitting the line.
4. MR MAKE BELIEVE – V Duric (4)
He has contested some smart races in his four starts this preparation including the G1 Rupert Clarke (eleventh) and most recently the Listed Weekend Hussler where he finished fifth but with not much luck in running from his inside draw. Drawn to get every chance again today and will be on the pace throughout. His chances improve should any rain come.
5. LORD PYRUS – Ms S Wynne (2)
Started at 100/1 when resuming on Cup Day in the Listed MSS Security Stakes and ran better than his price would’ve suggested finishing 5.5 lengths from Unpretentious. Has a solid second up record (only missed a place once from six starts) and from his inside draw, will be another that will look to take a forward position.
6. JUNGLE RULER – D Gauci (6)
The old boy lines up for start number one hundred and fourteen! As always, he’ll ensure a solid tempo and roll along in front but will find this harder than his last start third at Mornington in the Peninsula Cup behind Another Prelate where he was beaten 5 ½ lengths. He’ll need rain and a track bias toward front runners to have a chance.
7. MAHISARA – C Williams (7)
Sydney galloper from Paul Messara Stable who has won two of his three starts this time in, including a comprehensive victory in a Restricted 89 race on Cup Day under 59kgs. He’ll have to take a sit from his wide draw or be ridden a little quieter than what he usually is given that the pace should be a genuine one but he is going well, drops nicely in the weights and has won five of his fourteen starts.
A definite threat today.
8. MISTER MILTON – S King (9)
Despite having only won one of his nineteen starts, he has contested in some of the best races over the Spring – and gave a good account of himself. A fourth in the G2 Memsie behind Sincero and fourth again last start (at 100/1) to Whateverwhenever in the G3 Moonga Stakes, means that he’ll have to be considered here. He’s definitely fit enough; should enjoy the tempo of the race and ran third to Mosheen in the G1 Australian Guineas over a mile back in the Autumn.
9. MORANT – D Dunn (8)
He has ran fourth at each of his past three runs including the Listed Heading Out Stakes (behind Free Wheeling), the G3 Tab.com.au Stakes (behind Fawkner) and last Saturday behind Good Value and Galah in RST 95 race. All that followed an unlucky second to Miss Marx in the Listed Testa Rossa. The conditions, track and proposed pace of this race of this race all are in his favour but he always seems to be running which is a worry.
10. LORD WIMBLE – J Hill (10)
A 5yo Bianconi gelding who has been consistent over a long preparation this time in but will find this harder than his fifth behind Lord Of Brazil at Flemington on Oaks Day. Start prior was a solid win at Moonee Valley over Verification in the Country Cup. Any give in the ground will be a bonus, seven of his eight wins have come on ground Dead or worse but even then, I think should be safely held.
11. POTIONS – (1)
A lightly raced mare from Patinack Farm who has more ability than her career record of one win from eighteen starts suggests. She caught the eye three starts back making good ground behind Mahisara at Rosehill but draw 14 of 14 and 13 of 15 at her next two starts, got a long way back and never figured. Draws the inside today and could run better than her current quote of $51 would suggest.
12. BEACONS – A McCabe (11)
He has won four of his last eight starts but all have been on the Provincial circuit and in Restricted grade. Races close to the lead generally and, his wide draw coupled with than anticipated pace, makes it hard to see him as a genuine contender.
The pace should be very genuine with Jungle Ruler leading and rolling with Over Quota, Lord Pyrus and Mr Make Believe all looking to take advantage of their good draws. Going with Mahisara here, he’s going really win this time and trusting the ability of Williams to find him a spot in running, just off the leading group. Morant could finish right over the top of them but given his recent strike rate, would prefer to see him at a better price than the $5.50 on offer. Mr Make Believe at $11.00 is good eachway value and one for Multiples. Should’ve finished closer than he did last start and start prior was in a G1.
