Adam Page gives us his brief early look at Saturday’s Chairman’s Handicap at Randwick racecourse. View his tips and selections.
A good guide to the Sydney Cup. It’s an open race but I’ll go with Speed Gifted. He loomed up to win the Albury Cup last start but his fitness just gave out late and he finished third. The rise to 2600m is right up his alley, as will a rain affected track. He is a proven weight carrier so the 58kg won’t be an issue. I rate him highly.
C’est La Guerre is another horse who ran well in the Albury Cup. He was wide throughout yet he stuck to the task gamely to finish fifth. His lone win in Australia was at Randwick last year and Michael Rodd was in the saddle that day. He is a very hard horse to follow but if he decided to turn it on, he’ll look the winner.
Galizani looks the perfect Sydney Cup horse. She is a stayer with a capital s and she showed that last start with a dominant win in the Epona at Rosehill. Cassidy sticks and if the pace is on upfront, she’ll be finishing off the race better than any other.
Once Were Wild is the best horse in the race, but gee she has been ordinary this prep. This is D-Day for her otherwise her credentials as a Group One performer have to be questioned.
Selections:
Speed Gifted on top, to beat C’est La Guerre, Galizani and Once Were Wild.
