One of the premier race days not just in Sydney but indeed Australia is Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill and the bumper card of racing comes was run and won on Saturday. Here are the blackbookers for the program.

Race One: Darby Munro Stakes 1200m:

I Am Excited has done a great job this time in, winning 3/3, but the horse to follow for me is clear Isaurian. Just having his third start, did plenty wrong in the straight but still finished off soundly in defeat behind an above average type. Not sure where he goes now, but perhaps something like the Arrowfield Sprint would be an ideal target.

Race Two: Epona Stakes 1900m:

Broken record, but the run of Nettoyer, again, was outstanding. Being wide no excuse in the end, because that was the spot to be rather staying near the rail. Only horse to clock sub 35 for the race and she pretty much made her run 1000m out. Loomed to win and finish off but just blew out the final 200m. Not sure where she goes, but she’s flying.

Race Three: Manion Cup 2400m:

Not sure if this is Sydney Cup form but just purely looking at this race, Alward was the run of the race. Just had no hope of winning with the ride. Far too negative and was set an impossible task, and really, did a remarkable job to get as close as he did. Sydney Cup form? I’m saying definitely not. But Alward the horse to follow.

Race Four: Ranvet Stakes 2000m:

Gee this was a bit of a non contest I thought. Was hoping and anticipating a strong tempo but they crawled in front with Classic Uniform dictating and that was immediately advantage Gailo Chop and really, from the 800m onwards, perhaps further, it was painless. Single Gaze brave as ever and she’ll run a ripper in the Tancred.

Race Five: George Ryder Stakes 1500m:

33.31 final 600m for Winx…given the way the track played and the rating, that is just a freakish split, but then again, it is Winx. Happy Clapper outstanding and is spot on for the Doncaster. Kementari…he didn’t lose any admirers. The ride probably didn’t give him much chance of winning but he was still very sound. Keep an eye on Clearly Innocent. His finale was quite good late also.

Race Six: Rosehill Guineas 2000m:

If D’Argento heads to the Derby, no betting, he wins. But if not, then I think Mission Hill could well be the pony. That was an absolute gut buster for Ace High and we now know he isn’t as effective on wet ground. Mission Hill was great, working to the line with real purpose despite being in restricted room. He’ll come right on from that. Also special mention to Furore. He did an outstanding job there despite the quantum leap in grade/depth. Derby certainly out of his reach.

Race Seven: Golden Slipper 1200m:

Visually, brilliant win from Estijaab. But looking at the sectionals, she was helped with a really good mid race breather, going just over 35 between the 1000-400 and that helped her win the race. It’s been a tough day to make significant ground from last, especially in a slowly run race, so the runs of Seabrook and Long Leaf were outstanding, namely the latter, given it was his first look Sydney way, blinkers first time and was forced widest on the turn. Sunlight had her chance, as did Written By. Performer looked disappointing on face value.

Race Eight: The Galaxy 1100m:

They went mad in front here and it was suited for those just off the speed, running 32.58 between the 1000-400, and that just set up the race for In Her Time, who got into a lovely spot just off the pace and pounced at the right time. English great again, and what about the run of The Mission. He ran home very strongly late. Big tick to Snitty Kitty and Ball Of Muscle for fighting on like they did. Jungle Edge had the horror second up record and continued that trend unfortunately.

Race Nine: Birthday Card Stakes 1200m:

Sugar Bella a definite pass mark, Nancy was a good return, Hetty Heights outstanding nearer the inside late, but really, all credit to Quilista and Tommy Berry, who has had a bludger of a 17/18 season to date but good to see him get a feature win on a big day with this Weir mare, who led them a merry dance. Was there to be beaten but couldn’t be reeled in. On firmer footing, I’d be keen to see Nancy. She looks as if she’ll be a contender in the Godolphin Crown/Dark Jewel.

Lord Fandango- Looked a good race for him but he didn’t find much. Jury well and truly out
Kaonic- Promised so much, but he’s a pretender at this level
Derryn- Needs everything to fall into place to figure in the finish
