An excellent card of racing has been assembled to be run and won on Sydney’s best racing surface, Canterbury. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (13:00) : Schweppes Handicap 1200m:
Back Me: Going with 4 Dissolute (Best Odds: $2.80). This son of New Approach has only had the one trial, back on December 29 at Randwick when winning and doing it very easily. Bred to handle a wet track, and the trial was very impressive.
Big Danger: 1 Detective (Best Odds: $2.35) has only had one career start, back in the Breeders Plate (1000m) when second to stablemate and likely Magic Millions winner Capitalist. The trial was just fair I thought and he was scratched behind the barriers at Randwick on Boxing Day, so there are a few negatives against him, but no doubt he is the best horse in the race.
Roughie: 6 French Fern (Best Odds: $10.00) debuted in that race Detective was scheduled to run in, and she stuck to the task quite gamely when running third to Jeanneau, beaten just over three lengths. She should take good improvement from that and race day experience is always an advantage.
Race Two (13:40) : TAB Highway Plate (Class 3) 1100m:
Back Me: 10 Bring A Secret (Best Odds: $2.40) comes through the Inglis Sprint (1100m) at Randwick in what I think will be a hot form race. She wasn’t beaten that far and now drops to this level, as well as getting so well in at the weights, plus she is a winner in her lone run at the track. Looks well placed to bounce back to winning form.
Big Danger: 3 Gunnaza (Best Odds: $5.50) is a Coffs Harbour based gelding who resumed over 1000m on his track last Saturday and showed good speed throughout to lead all the way in a strong first up display. Should get over without too much trouble, and he gets the services of gun apprentice Andrew Atkins.
Roughie: 8 Rose Of Man (Best Odds: $3.80) resumed in the Randwick Highway race on December 5 and finished off alright behind Star Shaft, who has run well since while the runner up has since won, so the form reads very well, and he handles all conditions.
Race Three (14:15) : James Boags Handicap (72) 1550m:
Back Me: 2 Bold Adventure (Best Odds: $2.80) looks the good thing of the weekend. IMO, he is a potential Group l horse. He trialled like a star prior to debuting at Kembla Grange where he started at a short quote and bolted home. He is bred to swim, he has trialled impressively on wet ground…can’t see him getting beat.
Big Danger: 3 Chandana (Best Odds: $3.60) is on the back up from last Saturday at Rosehill where she got a long way back and worked home strongly late to run third to another high class three year old in Asinara. As I always say, I love Chris Waller horses on the back up, and the rise to 1550m should be ideal.
Roughie: 10 Heavenly Mum (Best Odds: $21.00) steps up to city grade after a couple of country wins, the latest at Nowra when sitting on speed all the way which followed a slogging win on a bottomless Muswellbrook surface, so the rain won’t worry this runner and the stable is absolutely flying at the moment.
Race Four (14:50) : McGrath Estate Agents Handicap (83) 1550m:
Back Me: The drop in depth and the chance of a track with give in it should suit 1 Zin Zan Eddie (Best Odds: $4.20), who was quite disappointing last time out at Rosehill when running last to Kaleidoscope. He is much better dipping his toe into the track and he is a winner at the course. This is D-Day for him IMO.
Big Danger: 4 Final Decision (Best Odds: $3.00) ran over 1500m at Rosehill last start where he worked home well late without threatening when third to Ammirata, beaten just over two lengths. His two runs prior were excellent in strong form races, so he really does look well placed here.
Roughie: 7 Der Meister (Best Odds: $31.00) resumed over the mile at Randwick and never got into the race behind the in form Medcaut. There was backing for him that afternoon and he looked good in the mounting yard, and with the drop in depth here, he can be a sharp improver at odds.
Race Five (15:25) : TAB Rewards Handicap (76) 1900m:
Back Me: Going with 1 White Dove (Best Odds: $5.50). This mare for Gai Waterhouse ran over this distance at Rosehill three weeks back and worked home strongly late to run a close up fourth to stablemate Kontiki Dane, beaten just over half a length. She has a great record at the track and loves getting her feet wet, so if she gets conditions to suit, she’ll take some running down.
Big Danger: 8 Rye (Best Odds: $4.60) ran over this track/distance on December 30 and worked home well without threatening when fifth to impressive winner Colour Of Money. He has been a bit costly in recent times, but this is a pretty thin race and there was merit in his last start performance.
Roughie: 10 Red Dubawi (Best Odds: $10.00) ran over this track/distance a couple of weeks back and was a bit disappointing behind Colour Of Money, but perhaps the big weight got to him. He won’t mind some give in the track, and he tumbles down 6kg from that outing.
Race Six (16:00) : More Than Ready @ Vinery Handicap (70) 1550m:
Back Me: There was plenty to like about the first up win of 5 Game Pie (Best Odds: $3.60) at Hawkesbury on December 13, sitting off the speed before letting down powerfully over the concluding stages and won like a good horse. Hardest test to date since arriving from the UK, but he looks to have enormous upside and he’ll relish the extra trip.
Big Danger: 9 Pico Turquino (Best Odds: $5.50) was a tragedy beaten when resuming over 1400m at Kembla Grange, missing the start badly before savaging the line to run a close up second to Man Of Colours. Has since trialled at Randwick and looked pretty good there behind Territory. With better barrier manners, he’ll take a power of beating here.
Roughie: Had the two horse above not been in, I’d be all over 1 Mydream (Best Odds: $13.00). Her run on Boxing Day at Randwick behind Testashadow was outstanding given she was back near last last in the run and the tempo was against her. First up run here behind Selita was a ripper and that horse franked the form last Saturday. She is a serious winning chance.
Race Seven (16:40) : Cellarbrations Handicap (78) 1250m:
Back Me: 4 Disgraceful (Best Odds: $2.60) ran at Randwick on Boxing Day and tried his heart out when a close up second to Testashadow, and that horse will go around at the Gold Coast, so the form should hold up nicely here, and he should get every chance from the good gate with Sam Clipperton aboard.
Big Danger: 11 Lucky News (Best Odds: $14.00) resumes here for Kristen Buchanan. This six year old mare hasn’t raced since August 15 when scoring a dominant win at Doomben, aided by a gem from Jimmy Orman. Recent Randwick trial behind Territory was sharp and she can run well when produced fresh.
Roughie: 12 Single Chance (Best Odds: $8.50) was backed at odds when resuming at Warwick Farm, and that support was justified when the gelding lunged right on the peg to grab victory. He is at his best on rain affected ground, and despite the wide gate, he’ll go close here.
Race Eight (17:20) : TAB More Than Just Winning Handicap (78) 1100m:
Back Me: 8 Alucinari (Best Odds: $3.00) has been given a three week freshen up since running home hard against the tempo when third to Allez Chival, beaten just over a length in an excellent performance. Takes on the older mares again, but she showed last start that she can handle it and seemingly loves racing here.
Big Danger: 3 Thud (Best Odds: $3.60) ran over 1200m at Randwick last time out and fought on very well when a close up second to Stakes performed mare Tree Of Jesse. She has a great record at the track, and as we have seen previously with Saturday meetings at this track, it is a definite advantage, plus the stable is flying. She also ran in the Allez Chival race mentioned above, but looks better placed here.
Roughie: 5 Highly Geared (Best Odds: $26.00) ran over this track/distance on December 30 where she doubled her price in betting and while the market was right, she did run well for third to surprise winner Andsoitiswritten. She has been up for a while, but continues to race very well at this level and will be thereabouts for sure.
Race Nine (17:55) : TFE Hotels Handicap (85) 1100m:
Back Me: 11 Raido (Best Odds: $14.00) resumed over this track/distance om December 11 and stuck to the task gamely when second to impressive winner Not A Hint, beaten just over half a length. He has a good record at the track and with much needed weight relief here, he should take some beating.
Big Danger: 10 Voilier (Best Odds: $5.50) resumed over 1000m at Randwick on Boxing Day where he looked home, but was nabbed right on the peg by Rule The River, who is the form galloper in Sydney at the moment. I think he is a pure sprinter, so at 1100m here second up should be ideal and now he has the run under the belt, he should be better off fitness wise.
Roughie: 13 Fireball (Best Odds: $15.00) resumed over 1000m on a bottomless Muswellbrook surface and plugged on well late when third to Eye Striker. That was a really good effort I thought considering he was first up and had 60kg on his back. Should improve big time off that, and he has run well on this track previously, so he is a must for exotics.
