The Perth Summer Carnival is done and dusted, but there is still a handy eight race program for Ascot this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (16:11) : Book Your Function At Ascot Handicap (78+) 1400m:
Back Me: 4 Hobart Jones (Best Odds: $3.70) ran over 1200m here last Saturday and didn’t really fire a shot when running sixth to Ron’s Call. He hasn’t done a great deal for some time, but the step up to 1400m and getting Pike back on could spark improvement required to win.
Big Danger: 5 Flying Roar (Best Odds: $3.20) was a bit unlucky not to win when racing over 1500m here last Saturday when sitting back in a slowly run race before flashing home to run second to Antique Dream. Back in trip should suit given there could be a more genuine tempo and that will see him prove hard to beat.
Roughie: 1 Checkpoint (Best Odds: $7.50) was out the back most of the way last Saturday in the Summer Scorcher (1000m) behind Sheidel. This is the easiest race he has contested in some time, and on class, he has these covered. Just what form is he in?
Race Two (16:51) : Amelia Park Plate 1000m:
Back Me: 1 Speeding Comet (Best Odds: $2.80) debuted over 1100m here a fortnight back and kicked on strongly for a narrow but impressive on speed win. Back to the 1000m should really suit this Simon Miller trained galloper and he’ll take some beating.
Big Danger: 2 Next Generation (Best Odds: $3.20) sat behind Speeding Comet in that race mentioned above, and seemingly had his chance to wind up but had to settle for a close up second. He should get every chance from the gate again, just a little query on back to 1000m.
Roughie: 6 The River (Best Odds: $3.20) is a son of Magnus on debut for Trevor Andrews who has looked quite sharp in a couple of barrier trial wins, the latest on December 21 at Belmont. Drawn awkwardly, but he looks to have some talent.
Race Three (17:36) : Perth Waitangi Day At Ascot February 6 Handicap (72+) 2400m:
Back Me: 7 Don’tgetcaught (Best Odds: $1.70) ran third in the ATA (2200m) behind Bedamijo before running again and settling for a close up second to Dark Alert. He is knocking on the door to win again, and he gets his chance here, especially with Pike in the saddle.
Big Danger: 1 Fulgur (Best Odds: $14.00) comes through the Perth Cup (2400m) last Saturday where he was outclassed clearly, but he stuck on okay I thought behind star mare Delicacy. That form reads so well for a race like this.
Roughie: 3 Operational (Best Odds: $19.00) hasn’t done a great deal this time in, but this looks the sort of race where he could improve sharply given it lacks depth and the small field could see him roll forward and take some holding out perhaps.
Race Four (18:15) : Perth Racing TV Plate 1400m:
Back Me: 2 Lite’N In My Veins (Best Odds: $1.30) debuted in the Group lll Steere Classic (1400m) on Kingston Town Day and produced a brilliant finish to get the job done. Fred Kersley can always produce a good one, and he has a ripper here. Trialled well since, and with normal luck, he’ll win again.
Big Danger: 9 Merrijig (Best Odds: $10.00) ran over this distance in a Pinjarra maiden last time out and produced a lovely turn of foot from a midfield position to get the job done impressively. Comes straight to town, which is always a good sign, and she only has to carry 51kg.
Roughie: 4 Glitterbell (Best Odds: $15.00) ran fourth to Scales Of Justice last time out over 1100m here and that effort was pretty good I thought, and the form has been franked with Scales Of Justice being very unlucky not to win last Saturday. Query at 1400m, but she should get the run of the race from the gate.
Race Five (18:50) : Become A Member Plate 1100m:
Back Me: 8 Hidden Grace (Best Odds: $5.00) ran over 1200m here a tick over three weeks back and worked home strongly late to run third to Rocket Queen. Back to 1100m looks ideal and Pike takes over, so she has to be right in the mix.
Big Danger: 1 Diamond Tonique (Best Odds: $4.40) resumed over this track/distance and worked home well late between runners behind Scales Of Justice, and as stated earlier, that form has well and truly held up. He is the class factor and looks well suited at the weights.
Roughie: 9 Confirmation (Best Odds: $15.00) ran down the straight at Pinjarra on Boxing Day and was well backed in betting, and for a few strides the daughter of Musket looked the winner, but she had to settle for second to War Of Whispers. Harder here, but only has to carry 51kg and draws well.
Race Six (19:30) : Lunar Raceday February 13 Handicap (60+) 1200m:
Back Me: 7 Chasing Chaos (Best Odds: $4.40) resumed on his home track at Albany with 60kg in a Class One and was solid when a close up second to Ransonnet. He was proven in the city last time in, so don’t worry about the rise in grade. He’ll prove hard to beat here, especially with the weight drop.
Big Danger: 5 Ripper Red (Best Odds: $3.50) ran over 1100m here last Saturday and worked home with real purpose when running a close up third to Volkoff. That was his first run five weeks, so there should be plenty of upside, and the extra 100m is perfect.
3 Wicked Hunter produced a brilliant finish to win here two back before backing up seven days later and working home nicely for fifth to Antique Dream, beaten two lengths. Three weeks between runs, which is ideal, and he won’t be far away from gate one.
Race Seven (20:05) : Like Us On Facebook Handicap (72+) 1200m:
Back Me: 4 Reflectance (Best Odds: $5.50) has really some of his best form in recent times, winning two on the bounce, the latest at Pinjarra over 1400m when letting down with a powerful turn of foot. He won here prior, and despite the wide gate, he’ll take a power of beating.
Big Danger: 2 Lenience (Best Odds: $7.00) ran over this track/distance last Saturday when working home strongly to run fourth to surprise winner Ron’s Call. He should be much closer from gate one here and will go awfully close with luck in running.
Roughie: 10 Secret Nova (Best Odds: $7.50) ran over 1000m here a tick over three weeks back where she looked the winner before being bloused late by Volkhoff, who franked the form by winning again. Won’t be far away from the good gate and should be around the mark.
Race Eight (20:40) : 5 Saturdays Of Summer $5 Only Handicap (60+) 1600m:
Back Me: 12 Bachelors Prospect (Best Odds: $10.00) has been pretty good in two runs back from a break. He ran over 1400m at Pinjarra on Boxing Day when working home alright late in the piece when fourth to Socially Unique. Mile looks ideal, Pike on and should be cherry ripe fitness wise now.
Big Danger: 9 Saker (Best Odds: $2.80) hasn’t raced in a month since running over 1500m here to run second to the above average galloper Lunar Eclipse. He is knocking on the door to win a race, and perhaps the freshen up could spark him back to winning form.
11 Dendee ran in the La Trice Classic (1800m) last Saturday and found the class a bit rich behind Ideal Image. This is her right level at the moment, and she should get every chance from the gate.
