The biggest race day on the Queensland racing calendar is Stradbroke Day and it comes around this Saturday, with an eight race program, three majors, including the Stradbroke Handicap (1350m). The weather is overcast, the track is soft (7) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Stradbroke 🏆: View the Stradbroke Handicap Field
Race 1. (11:45) Makers Mark Hinkler Handicap 1200m
2 Savanna Amour (Bet Now: $4.50) looks beautifully placed here I thought. Resumed three weeks back in the Chief De Beers where she was run off her legs by Spurcraft, who ran along at a brutal speed but worked home well late to run a close up sixth. Tick over trial last week was very good and up to 1200m…she has the class to beat these.
6 Too Good To Refuse (Bet Now: $8.00) is a classy son of Rothesay that resumes for the Desleigh Forster team. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Brisbane Handicap during the Summer Carnival here where he was a ripping sixth behind Cantbuybetter. Resumes without a trial, but the stable can get them to fire first up.
1 Kuro (Bet Now: $13.00) is a veteran for John O’Shea who was a drifter in betting a few weeks back in the Ortensia during the Scone Carnival and though he never threatened, he stuck on pretty well in defeat I thought behind impressive winner To Excess. Hasn’t won for a long time but he’s certainly good enough to threaten.
Race 2. (12:20) The Wayne Wilson 1600m
3 Ulmann (Bet Now: $4.40) is on the seven day back up for the Darren Weir team after running in the Spear Chief last Saturday where he just too got too far back in the run but the effort was much better than what it will say in the form guide behind Snippets Land. I think getting some weight relief and up to the mile are two big ticks, and he looks to get a sweet run just off the pace.
14 Sheiswhatsheis (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Tony Gollan trained mare who is in ripping form and once again gets speed map favours. She got that a fortnight back in the Lord Mayors Cup and tried really hard when second to Duca Valentinois. That was WFA, so that’s not her go and is better suited at a handicap. She’ll take some running down.
13 Divine Unicorn (Bet Now: $17.00) is a very good horse for Matty Dunn who resumed over 1400m at the Gold Coast a few weeks back where he toughed it out very strongly to get the win, under hard riding from Jeff Lloyd. Mind you, out toughing Oink isn’t difficult, but he proved that was no fluke with a gutsy effort behind Sabkhat. Third up at the mile looks ideal.
Race 3. (12:55) Queensland Guineas 1600m
I think the upside 14 Vontaine (Bet Now: $7.00) has should see her run well here. She absolutely spanked them two back at Kembla over the mile before stepping back to 1400m and that was against her in the end when second to Touch Of Mink. I think back up to the mile, and off the Kembla win, I think she’ll be much more effective.
Concede that 1 Peaceful State (Bet Now: $3.80) is a live threat. Just a little worry on what is left in the tank because he has had a pretty solid Autumn/Winter. Brilliant win two back on the Parks track before doing a power of work in the run over the mile in the Adelaide Guineas and his class got him home. Werribee trial looks good…just want to see him rather than back.
7 Seaway (Bet Now: $5.00) is a very interesting runner. Chris Waller trains this three year old who was given a peach to win two back over the Canterbury 1550m before stepping back to 1400m at Rosehill where he charged home to just miss out on picking up Lisdoonvarna. Back up in trip is a big tick and he’ll be strong late.
Race 4. (13:35) Brisbane Cup 2200m
5 Sedanzer (Bet Now: $2.70) the one to beat for mine. Her Premiers Cup run was enormous I thought, sitting wide throughout and in the end, she did a mighty job to get as close as she did to Rising Red. She was 1600-2200 that afternoon so now she has had the run under the belt and she does get a 2.5kg weight swing on Rising Red. Keen.
1 Ambitious (Bet Now: $3.50) is the class of the field and as such, he has to lump the weight. On face value, he was okay in the Doomben Cup behind Comin’ Through, but looking at the replay, you could make a small case that he should have just about won the race. Just didn’t get the right luck at the right time. Up to 2200m is a big tick. Just has to carry the weight.
10 My Diamantine (Bet Now: $46.00) is the one to include in multiples for sure for Brian Smith. She was over a month between runs when racing over 1700m at Ipswich when sitting back and finishing off with purpose to run second to Eminent. She will eat up the rise to 2200m and is a proven performer at this level. If it was a heavy track, she’d be a winning chance. But on firmer footing, I’d say exotics.
Race 5. (14:15) Stradbroke Handicap 1350m
I think this race will be dominated by those down in the weights, most notably 16 Champagne Cuddles (Bet Now: $5.75 FAT ODDS). Smashed the clock when winning the Gold Coast Guineas first up before going to the Kingsford Smith Cup where she was wide all the way but despite that, loomed large, but just ran out of condition the final 150m. Tumbles in weight, gate one, she ticks the boxes.
The map says that 15 Perast (Bet Now: $9.00 FAT ODDS) will run a beauty. The Paul Perry trained stable has this horse flying, with the colt winning his past two at this track/distance, the latest coming in the Fred Best. That win was huge I thought. He did all the work on speed, nearer the inside, yet fought on so well to win. Lloyd on and if he gets a cheap sectional, he’ll take some running down.
If there is any hint of tempo, 14 Invincible Gem (Bet Now: $15.00 FAT ODDS) is the mare to look out for. She should have won the Luskin Star during the Scone Carnival but just got too far back via a negative ride when a closing third to Osborne Bulls. In saying, she may have to be ridden negatively from the draw. However, with not many go forward horses, she can be given a dig in the ribs to be on speed.
Race 6. (14:55) JJ Atkins Plate 1600m
5 The Autumn Sun (Bet Now: $2.25) …just how good is he? Well I don’t know, but as you’ll see with most of the preview here, I’m slightly leaning towards those who didn’t have the gutbuster here a fortnight back. He instead ran over 1400m at Randwick and it was more or less a barrier trial for the colt. Avdulla was pretty much hands and heels throughout. He has fresh legs and timing.
From the Sires here a fortnight back, the horse I want to follow is 2 Zousain (Bet Now: $8.50). He just jumped too brilliantly and was left in front, which isn’t his go at all and in the end that probably cost him when second to Lean Mean Machine. Confident he turns the tables there…not sure he has the brilliance to beat The Autumn Sun.
What to do with 12 Plumaro (Bet Now: $18.00)…she’s got the talent to threaten, but she just continually misses the kick and obviously that will go against her winning better class races. She bombed the start in the Sires and had no hope after that in a total forgive run behind Lean Mean Machine. She does have upside and a brilliant finale if she’s close enough on the turn.
Race 7. (15:35) Queensland Derby 2200m
I think you have to believe what you see with 7 Live And Free (Bet Now: $6.50). A stayer that relaxes, handles all conditions and has a turn of foot. It’s an ideal recipe for success. His Randwick win a fortnight back was dominant with a touch of arrogance, aided by a peach of a steer from Avdulla. He should have no issue with 2200m and has that sense of timing.
11 Lucky For All (Bet Now: $5.50) is the real x factor. Darren Weir trains this highly exciting three year old. who won like a star two back at Caulfield. That made sure he was sent around at prohibitive odds two weeks back at Sandown and it was just an utter nightmare if you were on. Ethan Brown has credits in the bank, but he made the wrong decisions at the wrong times. Lane on a big tick and with clear air, this bloke will look the winner at some stage.
14 Banner Season (Bet Now: $17.00) is the interesting one. Kris Lees trains this three year old and he has really come from nowhere. Gave them a belting two back at Newcastle, though aided by a brutal speed. He then went to Ipswich last Wednesday to qualify for this race and despite doing plenty wrong, he was too good. Trip will be no issue, bigger track helps and Lloyd sticks.
Race 8. (16:15) Dane Ripper Stakes 1350m
The one at a silly price here is 6 Pecans (Bet Now: $11.00) so I’ll have something on her each way in the get out. Awesome first up winner of the Godolphin Crown before being freshened up and coming back to the 1100m at Randwick where she was quite good behind Dreamforce. Has been set for this and the Tatts Tiara and she gets a wet track, so she has plenty going for her.
9 Moss Trip (Bet Now: $4.00) is high in the markets for the Tatts Tiara and understandably so. Let down with a beautiful finale to win the James Carr during the Randwick Carnival before going to the Scone Guineas where she sat off a fast speed and produced a brilliant finishing burst to win impressively and warrant a Tatts Tiara prep. Trial last week at Randwick was very good.
2 French Emotion (Bet Now: $11.00) looks a silly price. This girl is absolutely flying for Chris Waller, winning her past two in impressive fashion. Knocked down for a good price at the Gold Coast broodmare sale. Looks to get a lovely run here, she has residual fitness and a hard 1350m certainly no issue for her at all.
