The standalone Gosford meeting, the inaugural edition, will be run at Randwick this Saturday, with the feature being the Gosford Cup (2000m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Gosford Cup 🏆: View the Field for the Gosford Cup
Race 1. (11:35) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1200m
15 Tejori… (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS) if she runs 1200m, think she wins. Looks quite a smart animal for Nick Olive that resumed over 1000m on the home track at Canberra and she gave them a proper spanking, winning by over four and her time was two lengths faster than the Federal run on the same day, a race which was Benchmark 70. Just has to stretch her brilliance to 1200m and she’s too good I think.
6 Hellenism (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) looks a big improver. This mare was being touted as a potential Country Championships candidate but a slight setback meant she was freshened up. Ran in a Highway here three weeks ago when wide throughout and she stuck on pretty well in defeat I thought. Has that run under the belt and up to 1200m, easily likeable.
I’ve been really disappointed with 3 Luna Mia (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) and her prep. Off the trials prior to the resumption, she looked a serious Country Championships contender but couldn’t qualify. Ran in the Highway here three weeks back when wide with cover and on face value, had her chance, but nothing really made ground from the second half of the field. This will be a guide as to how well she’s going, but I keep coming back to the Kosciuszko where she was luckless.
Race 2. (12:10) Central Coast Mariners Hcp 1200m
I was anticipating 6 Equation (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) would be racing elsewhere but the fact he debuts at a Saturday metro meet instead of midweek or provincial is a sign to me that the stable thinks highly of him, like I do. I think he’s very much above average and is my early speck for the JJ Atkins at around $51+. Loved what I have seen from him at the trials. He can sit on speed, take cover, he handles wet, dry, plus has change up speed. Ticks all the boxes for me.
Keen to see 1 Valaquenta (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS) resume for the James Cummings team. Well bred colt that had a two run prep in the Autumn to start his career, winning impressively on debut at the Valley before going to the Blue Diamond Prelude when far from disgraced in defeat behind Hanseatic. Resumes and loved the way he closed off in a Warwick Farm trial last week. 1200m first up is ideal and has a touch of quality.
8 Overlord (Bet Now: $8.00 TOP ODDS) is a son of Sebring for Chris Waller that was kept quite safe in betting when debuting on the Kenso track and he was quite good late in defeat I thought behind impressive winner Ocean Emperor. Form out of it has been mixed, so a little query there, but off that run, this colt should love the rise to 1200m.
Race 3. (12:45) Tooheys (bm78) 1100m
8 Sophiella (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Not A Single Doubt for the Bjorn Baker team that resumes. This mare hasn’t raced since January 4 on the Kenso track when down the track behind a handy one in Rare Episode so that form reads okay for this. Trials leading in have been good and IMO looks ready to go for a first up assault.
5 Lesage (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS) is flying for James Cummings. Gave them a spanking when leading throughout at Hawkesbury two back before going to Canterbury where positive Initiative from Nash saw the filly go to the front and on a day where on speed/rail was gold, that proved to be the winning move. She’s a beauty and will run well again I’m sure.
2 Freehearted (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is a stablemate for Sophiella that is also first up. She’s a six year old mare that has had a few homes during her career and has been pretty solid throughout, but her two trials have been very encouraging I think. Has looked sharp in behind them with something in hand to the eye. Has a soft gate to do no work and finish off strong.
Race 4. (13:20) Westpac Rescue Helicopter-bm78 1400m
10 Miss Einstein (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) for me. Bjorn Baker trained mare that looked very sharp in a trial prior to resuming two weeks ago at Rosehill where she got back in the run, was held up before getting clear late and finishing off very strongly behind Oakfield Missile. Up to 1400m and on the bigger track looks a really good set up and am keen on her chances.
2 Subpoenaed (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) is the clear horse to beat here. The only knock on her is gate one and where she gets to, because she is showing no early speed. Chris Waller, after the James Carr, hopefully, has figured out that she might be a 2000m horse and that 1400-1600m might be her go. Her run to get close to knocking off Rubisaki was enormous. If she gets luck from the gate, she wins, but it could get very ugly.
7 Surreal Step (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) is flying for Team Hawkes. The only query is can he do it on dry instead of wet ground, which he got last time out at Warwick Farm and he lapped it up from the front in a dominant win. He looks to lead these comfortably and will give a bold sight. Difference between here and last time is the quality of horse flesh that is chasing will be better.
Race 5. (14:00) Master Builders Assoc Nsw-bm78 1200m
14 Masked Crusader (Bet Now: $1.75) does look a very exciting prospect for Team Hawkes and confident he can make it 2/2 this time in. Resumed over 1000m at Bendigo when held up behind the speed and for a few strides looked in trouble, but once he got clear, he lengthened like a good horse and won with a bit in hand. He is looking for dry ground hence why he’s come to Sydney and is the one to beat.
5 Segalas (Bet Now: $9.00) is a key threat for me. James Cummings trained mare that was a little unlucky not to win two back at Warwick Farm behind Bolero King before stepping up to 1300m at Rosehill two weeks ago and worked home strongly late behind Oakfield Missile. That hard 1300m run should bring her right on for this 1200m assignment and is one of the hardest to beat in a competitive race.
16 Trophies Galore (Bet Now: $23.00) is an absolute beauty for Andrew Robinson that is racing just so well at the moment. Ran in a strong benchmark race at Newcastle last time out when back in the run before peeling wider and looming large to win but just failing to get there when second to a progressive type in Ulysses. Has run well at metro level before so think she can measure up here.
Race 6. (14:40) Signarama Erina/gosford (bm78) 1800m
Think a rise to 1800m is perfect for the James Cummings trained 11 Loveseat (Bet Now: $3.80). She was very good first up over the mile at Warwick Farm behind Gone Bye before coming back to 1550m at Canterbury and under Bowman, sat last before peeling wider and loved the way she put them away against the track pattern to win. Should love the step up to 1800m and has upside.
2 Laure Me In (Bet Now: $9.00) is a David Pfieffer trained gelding that is bursting to win a race. He ran over 2000m at Rosehill two weeks ago where he was held up for a few strides on the turn and that cost him the race I think when beaten a lip by Welsh Legend. Back in trip is a little query, but has a gate to do no work and be strong late.
I think one that could be a sneaky chance at big odds is 9 Pirate Ben (Bet Now: $67.00), who ran in the Welsh Legend race from two weeks back at Rosehill. He was ridden far too aggressively to get on speed and he was a beaten horse on the turn, finishing tailed off last. Rachel King is back on and he rides this guy very well. Ridden quiet, he can finish off well.
Race 7. (15:20) Gosford Gold Cup 2000m
If she’s decent double figure odds, I’ll be betting up each way on 11 Scarlet Dream (Bet Now: $9.50) for Team Hawkes. Pilot error cost her the win first up at Caulfield when beaten a lip by Guizot. Then went to 2000m in the Easter Cup at Caulfield in what was a fast run race, plus a wet track, and she fails to go a yard on wet ground. Much better suited here on firmer footing and off the resumption, goes close.
Thought it was a more than encouraging resumption from 4 Brimham Rocks (Bet Now: $10.00) in the Hawkesbury Cup. He’s better suited over 2400m+ so it was good to see him finding the line well late first up over 1500m behind Amangiri. Off that, you would have to suspect he’ll be hard to beat here up in trip. Does he need one more run though?
14 Aliferous (Bet Now: $12.00) has been teasing all Autumn to win one. Continually finds the line well, looks well placed. Just can’t quite get the win on the board. Ran in the Hawkesbury Cup off a freshen up and loved the way she found the line late after being tardy away, clocking the best late splits of the race. Eats up 2000m here and is a key threat.
Race 8. (16:00) Takeover Target Stakes 1200m
3 Greyworm (Bet Now: $3.00) is just so reliable and happy to butter up again with him. He was big odds when markets went up prior to the Hall Mark but the way the track was playing, he was heavily backed late and once he got a cheap lead, it was game over. Cops more pressure here one would assume but that was his first run in five weeks so there should be room for improvement.
I wouldn’t say 2 Deprive (Bet Now: $6.00) has been disappointing this time in, but I have expected a bit more and I reckon he’s a length or so off his best. He finished midfield in the Hall Mark and yes, the tempo wasn’t hot for him to finish over the top, but still thought he was entitled to do a bit more. If the tempo is more genuine this time around, he can take this out.
7 Signore Fox (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Team Snowden trained four year old that had trialled up enormous prior to resuming in the Hall Mark where he didn’t really take advantage of gate one, was back in a slowly run affair, but at the same time, he didn’t really fire a shot. Have to forgive him for that run and give him another chance.
Race 9. (16:40) Kentan Machinery (bm88) 1600m
I think on a firmer deck, 11 Grand Piano (Bet Now: $2.90) is worth another look at the mile. Ran over this track/distance in the Carbine Club during The Championships but failed to see it out behind Entente. Came back to 1500m two weeks ago at Rosehill and under a lovely ride from Nash, was too good, just. Think he’s hard to beat against these in a competitive race.
4 Rapido Chaparro (Bet Now: $4.80) looks on track for a good prep. Just looked in need of the run when resuming in the Moruya Cup before going to 1500m at Rosehill when on speed with the 62.5kg and was very brave in defeat behind Grand Piano, refusing to surrender in a good battle to the line. He’s better over a bit further, but lands on speed here and with the weight relief is hard to run down.
2 Articus (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Kris Lees trained gelding that was good late first up in the Muswellbrook Cup before being given a freshen up and racing in the Tamworth Cup and was really good in defeat when a close up fifth to Ligulate. He’ll come on from that I would assume and he does have a pretty good record at Randwick.
