A nine race card has been assembled for Ascot on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit
Race 1. (14:19) Tabtouch Westspeed Mdn 1400m
I’ll take a punt on 11 Ancient Remedy (Bet Now: $23.00), a David Harrison trained filly that was backed with real confidence at odds last time out at Pinjarra but the tempo was a crawl and given she was back off it, she pulled hard and that probably brought undone her finale somewhat when fifth to Jakestar. Good lead that Paul Harvey is on to take the ride.
3 Billy Jack (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Robert Bell trained son of Alfred Nobel who has had two career outings, both coming at Albany. Was a real eye catcher from the back on debut before being ridden to lead next start and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off. Interesting to see what they do this time around but like the booking of Jason Whiting.
6 Belafonte Boy (Bet Now: $9.50) is one I’d keep an eye on at odds. Was $101 when racing over the mile here last Saturday in a 3YO Handicap, but despite the odds, gee he ran a beauty without any luck in the straight and should have finished. If this was a 1600m maiden, he’d be a good thing. Just not sure back to 1400m.
Race 2. (14:59) Gourmet Takeaway Plate 1200m
Just has to hold his form and 1 Charleton Eddie (Bet Now: $1.26) wins again. The Casey stable look to have a decent juvenile on their hands with this gelding, who has won three on end, the latest coming two weeks ago at this track/distance when leading throughout and giving them a proper spanking. This race actually looks weaker, so hard to see him getting beat unless he has an off day.
7 Ghobella (Bet Now: $7.50) has finished runner up in both career outings and each time has been pretty good, the latest coming just under two weeks ago when off the speed and finishing off strongly, beaten a half length by Samsurian. Would love to see her step up to 1400m. Doubt she wins, but she’ll work home strongly late.
4 Powerful (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Nicconi gelding for Neville Parnham who is on debut. This juvenile has had two trials this prep to get ready for start one, the latest coming over 1000m last week at Belmont when running second but looking to go about his business quite nicely. Tricky draw to overcome, but always have to respect the stable and their babies.
Race 3. (15:39) Amelia Park (bm56+) 1200m
1 Platinum Bullet (Bet Now: $3.10) looks one of a couple of good things on the program. Simon Miller trains this filly, who was excellent off a moderate speed when resuming here on Good Friday before racing here last Wednesday when given a lovely ride just off the speed from Smokin Joe and the filly showed her class. Third up, hard fit, looks the one to beat, clearly.
7 Dew West (Bet Now: $10.00) looks a big improver here. Resumed over 1000m here three weeks ago when on speed under Pike and loomed to win and beat Round The Point but a lack of race fitness brought her undone in the end, with the market suggesting as much leading in ($5-$8.50). Up to 1200m, fitter, and good lead that Pike sticks.
5 Sea War (Bet Now: $18.00) has to bring it to town for Steve Wolfe but hard to ignore how impressive he has been in two runs/wins this prep at Albany, the latest coming on April 12 when sitting off the speed and producing a brilliant finale to get the job done. Good test for him, but he’s a winner and stable is having a good run at the moment.
Race 4. (16:19) Byron Bay Premium Lager-rs1mw 1100m
3 Eristic (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Karen McDonagh trained gelding that ran last Wednesday over 1200m here when back near last in the run and finishing off his race with real purpose when third to Platinum Bullet, beaten three lengths, but the run was quite good. He’ll likely spot them a start but will be charging at them late.
6 Denim Pack (Bet Now: $6.50) looks to have returned in good order if his resumption is any guide. Resumed here last Wednesday over 1200m here and liked the way he found the line late behind a good one in Platinum Bullet, a filly who I am keen on in the third, so by jump time here, you’ll know how strong that form reference is.
2 Argent D’Or (Bet Now: $35.00) is the very interesting runner. He has had a few homes throughout his career and is with Fred Kersley. Had two runs for the stable last time in and failed to fire a shot in a very disappointing display. Resumes without a trial but can sprint well fresh based on prior form, so I’d be watching the market.
Race 5. (16:55) Crown Perth (rs1mw) 1400m
10 Firesale (Bet Now: $3.20) has his confidence sky high now and hopefully can go on with it. Heavily backed when racing over 1400m at Pinjarra last time out when getting the sweet sit just off the speed before Pateman angled into clear air and loved the way he put them away, sprinting clear late for a dominant win. Hasn’t ticked the metro box but gets a great chance here.
2 Fire Maker (Bet Now: $7.00) is a son of Husson Lightning that was too good for the low flying King Blitz two back at Pinjarra before having a freshen up and racing over 1400m at Pinjarra when back in trip and loved the way he found the line late when third to I’m Pretty. Another that has failed in town before but he’s racing in near career best form.
1 Sir Snugalot (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Steve Wolfe trained gelding that comes to town in winning after getting the job done last time out on his home track at Albany under a lovely steer from Brodie Kirby, who had him tucked in behind the speed before getting the cutaway and dashing late to win. Gets the claim for Chris Graham and again draws well.
Race 6. (17:25) Kirin Megumi (bm72+) 1600m
Going to give 5 Megazone (Bet Now: $2.35) a chance. Ashley Maley trained gelding that was really good late first up over over 1200m behind Black Ducati three weeks ago before going to 1400m last Saturday when wide no cover for the trip and battled away. Like that he jumps to the mile on the quick turnaround and has run well on the seven day back up previously.
8 Star Value (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Dion Luciani trained gelding that resumed over 1400m here two weeks ago and was pretty good in defeat I thought after sitting back, wide with cover. Should have won second up last prep over the mile here and this race, overall, doesn’t appear overly strong. Just not sure where he gets to from the draw.
1 Pushin’ Shapes (Bet Now: $23.00) is the clear class factor here and it will carry him a long way. It’s one of the easiest races he has contested in some time after racing in the Diggers Cup two weeks ago when down the track behind King Blitz. If he was anywhere near right, he bolts up. Just the weight, tricky gate and his recent form will ensure you get a good price.
Race 7. (17:55) Schweppes (bm68+) 1200m
Confident that 1 Massimo (Bet Now: $2.00) can bounce back into the winners list. Son of Sessions that resumed over 1000m where he was originally an odds on pop but he paraded quite fresh, the market reacted, he drifted, and ran accordingly, with a weak finale behind surprise winner Guns Of Navarrone. Fitter, up to 1200m, he has the runs on the board to bounce back.
9 Black Ducati (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Blackfriars mare for Michael Lane that resumed over 1200m here three weeks ago and really, if you were on, it was a painless watch from the home turn onwards. Was put into a lovely spot by Chris Parnham and once she got clear, it was race over. Harder here, but confident she can measure up.
4 Nelson’s Flight (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Michael Morton trained gelding that resumes. This seven year old hasn’t raced since December 7 over the mile here when down the track behind Arctic Stream, who went on to win a Stakes race so that form clearly reads well for this. Resumes without a trial but can pull out a decent run fresh.
Race 8. (18:25) Eurythmic Stakes 2100m
Think up to 2100m will really suit 5 Mystery Miss (Bet Now: $2.90), who ran over 1800m here two weeks ago in the Diggers Cup and seemingly had every chance but still wasn’t too bad in defeat behind King Blitz. Lone start at 2000m+, she bolted up last year in the Belmont Oaks and to me, she’s racing as if she wants a staying trip.
4 Western Temple (Bet Now: $15.00) is fourth up from a break and should be close to peak fitness. He ran over 2200m here three weeks ago and with the big weight, ran on well from off the speed when when third to Red Army in a field of six. He’s got the class to beat these and should be ready now fourth up from a break and did win fourth up last prep.
1 Lord Fandango (Bet Now: $8.50), if he was right, would spank these. Two runs for Lindsey Smith have been pretty plain. Resumed in the Pinjarra Cup when down the track behind Spiritual Warrior before going to the WA Cup when a beaten horse a fair way out and was really ordinary, with Spiritual Warrior winning the race. His best sees him win. Just hasn’t seen it.
Race 9. (19:00) Seppelt Wines (bm64+) 1800m
8 Watch Me Ney Ney (Bet Now: $10.00) is worth a throw at the stumps here. David Harrison trains this gelding, who ran over the mile here a couple of Wednesdays back when four wide no cover for the trip and was given a really sore back in a total forgive. Big tick that the stable gets Paul Harvey to steer and I don’t see 1800m being an issue.
2 Divine Shadow (Bet Now: $7.00) hasn’t really put a foot wrong this prep for Brett Pope. Narrow second to Dark Choice two back before getting a well deserved win on the board at the mile here a couple of Wednesdays back. To me, I think 1800m has to be a query with him, but the big thing going for him is that he gets gate one.
Not sure 1 Dark Choice (Bet Now: $5.00) is a roughie as such given she’s certainly a leading mix. Ran over 2200m last Saturday and seemed to have every chance but was still quite good in defeat when third to Volkswagon Frank. Back to 1800m is the knock with her, she’ll get back and spot them a start but will be strong at the end.
