Nine races will be run and won at Ascot this Saturday where it is Lee Steere Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:18) Cbre Supports Cystic Fibrosis 1100m
Hard seeing anything other than a win for 1 Too Spicy (Bet Now: $2.40). This Dion Luciani trained filly has had two career outings. Debuted with a fast finishing second and with that run under the belt, looked the one to beat two weeks ago here and she duly bolted up. Extra 100m should be ideal for her, has the hard race experience and I don’t think there is anything special here, so she’ll do me.
3 Galahad (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of Galah that had trialled up well prior to debuting in the Too Spicy race from two weeks ago where he was tardy away and very new/raw to the caper and didn’t really look a winning threat, but made ground late in an encouraging debut. Would like to think he improves off that and extra trip suits.
4 Rebel Tail (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Tiarna Robertson trained filly who was well specked at odds when having her first start over 1000m here a fortnight ago when back off the speed with cover and finishing off okay without threatening when fourth to Too Spicy. Late splits weren’t too bad, so I think she’ll run well once again and fill a first four spot.
Race 2. (15:58) Tabtouch (72+) 1600m
2 Forceful (Bet Now: $2.05) should be suited b ack in trip. He ran second to Cockney Crew last start when near the speed and I thought Johnston-Porter rode a peach race on Forceful, but was no match late for the tough four year old, who is one of the leading local candidates for the Perth Cup. That sort of form does read well for this, hard fit and now has found some positive form.
This is a significant step up in grade/depth for 4 Harry Thomas (Bet Now: $4.60) but this Ross Price trained gelding has been really consistent this time in. Got a well deserved win on the board three weeks ago at this track/distance in a much easier but did the work on speed and when asked for the big effort, he responded very well. Lands near the front and will be tough to get past.
7 Bold Success (Bet Now: $23.00) has run well in town before and I think he can continue that. Was okay two back here behind Platoon before going to Northam where he took an eternity to wind into his work but was sound in defeat behind All Square. Can sit near the speed if pushed and I think the potential is there for him to do that. Knockout chance at odds.
Race 3. (16:43) Hemponics Australia (78+) 1400m
5 Western Temple (Bet Now: $1.55) looks one of the better bets on the card. He was confidently backed when racing at this track/distance two weeks ago and sitting off a genuine speed, Pike weaved his magic and the horse dashed right away for a dominant win. With Wrinkly involved, the tempo should be strong and with that in mind, it just sets up perfect for Western Temple.
2 Wrinkly (Bet Now: $5.00) gets his chance to find some positive form. He has contested Stakes company in his first two runs for this prep, the latest coming last Saturday in the Asian Beau when doing plenty of work on speed and feeling the pinch late behind Samizdat. This is a significant drop in depth and if he can find something near his best, he’ll go close.
This time last year, 3 Properantes (Bet Now: $21.00) was winning the Peters and shaping up in some very strong races, but the last couple of preps he has been really ordinary. Hasn’t raced since May 11 over the mile here when down the track behind Touch Of Silver. Has trialled well leading in, can sprint fresh and his best is clearly good enough.
Race 4. (17:25) Conquer Cystic Fibrosis Plate 1100m
Giving 3 Miss Tycoon (Bet Now: $26.00) another chance. She resumed over 1200m first up in the Belgravia when four wide for the trip without cover and dropped out to finish near last behind Jericho Missile. Short course racing looks her go in life, so back to 1100m and back in depth are two big ticks, but the massive tick is drawing gate one. Hard to beat off her 2YO form.
6 Drinkwhatyoulike (Bet Now: $3.30) is on the seven day turnaround for the Simon Miller team after racing last Saturday over 1000m when wide no cover and at the top of the straight, she looked like she was going backwards, but she picked up late and surged hard to get the win near the peg. If she can get over on speed from the gate, she’s hard to run down.
8 Ziebell (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Luke Fernie trained gelding that has been pretty good in two career outings. Resumed on his home track at Kalgoorlie in a maiden and duly bolted up under Froggy Newitt before going to the 1200m here when leading and kicking strongly but just failing to see out the six furlongs. Like him back in trip and the claim for McNaught helps.
Race 5. (18:10) Glenroy Chaff (rs1mw) 1000m
Taking a chance on 7 Driftstar (Bet Now: $5.50), who resumes for the Neville Parker team. This guy is first up, having not raced since June 8 at Belmont when on speed and dropping out when beating one runner home behind True Attraction in a race which had far more depth than what he faces here. Ran sharp time in a recent Lark Hill trial win where Pateman rode and he sticks with him here.
5 Beautiful Mind (Bet Now: $2.90) is a daughter of So You Think for the Lindsey Smith stable that resumes. She last raced over 1400m here in early April where she was a break between runs and was 1100-1400m, looking the winner but just felt the pinch late. Sprint racing looks her go in life and though resumes without a trial, she does have a sharp record when produced fresh.
1 Spirit And Fire (Bet Now: $14.00) has been teasing to win again, but it’s a matter of how deep are your pockets. Ran over 1200m here two weeks ago when just off the speed and looked in a threatening position but couldn’t finish it off at all behind Megazone. He’s one for exotics I think because his best is clearly good enough.
Race 6. (18:40) Amelia Park (rs1mw) 1400m
Peter Fernie has 7 Smarty (Bet Now: $3.70) flying this time in and confident she can measure up in town. This mare has won her past three, all coming on her home track at Kalgoorlie, with the latest coming over this trip when back off a reasonable speed before Yuill got her into clear and she just attacked the line and put the race to bed. If she brings that here, she can win.
11 Roadrager (Bet Now: $13.00) can improve second up. Had his first run for Team Williams at Bunbury where he was specked at odds and ran okay without really threatening behind Excise Free, who is a proven city performer, so that form doesn’t read too bad for a 1MW race, he’s got a fair amount of upside to come and Pike takes the ride.
Back to 1400m looks ideal for the Gary Crispin trained 9 Zero Demerits (Bet Now: $13.00). This gelding ran over 1500m here two weeks ago where he got back in the run but Whiting gave him a lovely ride and loomed to win but beyond 1400m, I think that’s just a bridge too far, eventually running third to Lorentinio. Tricky gate, but hard to beat.
Race 7. (19:10) Fairetha Stakes 1400m
8 Bogart (Bet Now: $8.50) looks like he will eat up a longer trip, so I’m in his corner here. He comes through the Belgravia when off the speed and looked a bit one paced but was good the last little bit and through the line, looking like a horse that wants further, which he gets here, and Pike takes over. Tricky race, but he’ll do me. Just needs a little bit of luck from a tricky gate.
2 Jericho Missile… (Bet Now: $2.30) can he repeat his Belgravia win? He was very good first up in the 3YO Classic but surprisingly was unwanted in betting in the Belgravia, where he peeled to the outside and produced an outstanding finale to get the job done in impressive fashion. Off that, should eat up 1400m and is a leading chance.
3 Red Can Man (Bet Now: $4.80) is a son of Gingerbread Man who won his first two runs for the prep in good style before racing over 1200m here when on speed in a slowly run affair and trying hard, but couldn’t finish it off when fourth to Boomtastic, beaten a couple of lengths. Reckon if he gets on speed and rolls, he’ll run a race at odds.
Race 8. (19:50) Lee Steere Stakes 1400m
5 The Velvet King (Bet Now: $3.70) is hard fit and has the runs on the board after winning the Northerly Stakes last time out where he got a dream sit behind the speed before getting the split and showing a good turn of foot to take the lead then fend them off late to get the job done. Drawn okay, I suspect he rolls forwards and will make sure this is a truly run 1400m contest.
4 Achernar Star (Bet Now: $3.30) looks one of the main chances for Simon Miller. He ran second to The Velvet King in that race mentioned above where he was back in the run and chasing hard, taking a little while to get into his work, but was very good late, just missing out on the win. Where he gets to from the gate is unknown, but clearly in the mix.
Class will carry 1 Gatting (Bet Now: $4.60) a long way towards victory. He had a very good prep in Melbourne, highlighted of course by his win in the Makybe Diva when beating then boom horse Mystic Journey. Returns back home for the Railway/Kingston Town and while it’s been a month between runs, he does have the class factor and is very well suied at WFA.
Race 9. (20:25) Crown Sports Bar (bm72+) 1200m
I’m hoping Azzopardi forces the issue with 1 Dance Music (Bet Now: $4.20) and lets this mare run, taking no prisoners. Resumed at this track/distance three weeks ago and was a total forgive when wide no cover on a good speed and tiring late. Her best efforts have come when leading and dominating from the front, so if that eventuates here, I think she wins.
4 Uni Time (Bet Now: $3.00) is a Sharon Miller trained gelding who is putting together a very good record and will take some beating here. Resumed over 1100m here two weeks ago where the potential was there for him to sit wide from the gate but he was able to slot in one off and once he did, it was race over. With improvement off that, he’s a key chance.
6 Shady Grey (Bet Now: $34.00) is a son of Vital Equine that resumes. This gelding hasn’t raced since Feb 2 over 1000m here when down the track behind Snow Lord in a race where the form has been pretty solid out of it and the time was quick relative to the meeting. Been given a good break and has trialled well leading in. Three of his six career wins have come fresh.
