The Magic Millions Carnival at the Gold Coast kicks off this Saturday with a bumper nine race program. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
The Wave 🏆: View the Field and Odds for The Wave
Race 1. (13:23) Aquis Hcp 1200m
4 Derulo (Bet Now: $5.00) deserves another chance. John Smerdon trained North Queensland rising star that had his first run for the stable at Doomben three weeks ago. Was chasing from the outset and didn’t really look comfortable at any stage but liked the way he picked up late in the piece when second to Kaoru King. He’ll improve off that and does have a touch of class/quality.
5 Good Chat (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented animal for David Vandyke that should be a leading contender here. Ran over 1200m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where he attempted to lead throughout and I thought was given a nice ride in front from Bossy. Just couldn’t quite finish it off and was bloused near the peg by Shooting For Gold. Like him here against this lot.
1 Mishani Miss (Bet Now: $11.00) is better suited at 1000m than 1200m and if this was 1000m, I’d have her on top. Both starts/wins this prep have come at the five furlongs, the latest an impressive win at the Sunny Coast. Bit of give in the track won’t hurt, Rodd sticks, draws soft…including in multiples.
Race 2. (13:58) Gold Pearl 1100m
I’m going with 1 Miss Hipstar (Bet Now: $2.80) and I think she could measure up seven days later provided she runs up to expectations here. 2/2 to start her career, the latest coming over 800m at Ipswich. Did she beat much? No, but she did it from the front and it was pretty much a barrier trial. You hear Larry Cassidy talk about this girl, and he thinks she is a top juvenile. I’ll back in his judgement.
9 Swift Witness (Bet Now: $4.20) has the WaterBott polish and should command respect. This girl debuted in the Wyong 2YO Magic Millions and bumped into a potential star in She’s All Class, battling away well to run third. That form looks pretty solid for this race and is in the right stable.
I thought there was a bit of dominance about the debut win of 3 Illiciate Affairs (Bet Now: $16.00) at Toowoomba a few weeks ago, leading throughout and she gave her rivals a spanking from the front in a pretty slick first up effort. Off that, 1100m here should be fine and always have to respect the stable when they bring a younger horse to town.
Race 3. (14:33) Gold Nugget 1100m
What to do with 2 Shaquero? (Bet Now: $3.50) He was too bad to be true in the Bruce McLachlan after trialling up sharply and seemingly taking on an average field. He was beaten 300m out and ended up 7.5L from the winner in a terrible return. Jury is out if Waller can train a top two year old for these better races. This guy needs to run well here to warrant a start next Saturday. Hopefully the stable can wave the magic wand and get him back to somewhere near his debut win, which would see him win this.
1 Finance Tycoon (Bet Now: $2.30) as been kept on ice for the Magic Millions. Hayes/Dabernig trained juvenile that hasn’t been seen since winning at Flemington during Cup Week, taking out the Maribyrnong Plate. Had a trial win at Albury early last month to keep his fitness levels up and stable have realised that the seven day back up into the GF is a proven formula.
Big watch here on 7 Character (Bet Now: $5.00), who debuts for James Cummings and Godolphin. Has been well grounded for start one with a prep in the Spring before a break. Trialled up at Hawkesbury and looked very sharp there in winning, so really keen to see how he goes fresh against these. They look the only three winning chances.
Race 4. (15:12) Magic Millions Country Cup 1200m
1 Animate (Bet Now: $5.00) has a good second up record and can run a much improved race here from his resumption, which came in the Wyong 3&4YO Magic Millions where he got back, held up and only really battled late behind Eleven Eleven, who came out to win last Friday night, so the form has held up and he does go much better second up.
8 Unconditional (Bet Now: $5.00) looks to be flying for the Edmonds camp and is hard to beat here. Came through a Warwick heat where he got back to near last in the run and was never really a winning factor, but made up a stack of ground. If he’s within range on the turn, he is good enough to win.
I’m wary of 2 Ramtastic (Bet Now: $10.00) for Kelly Schweida. He was several weeks between runs when racing over 900m here a couple of weeks ago where he got back off the speed nearer the inside and just couldn’t get involved. Was that more or less a barrier trial? His record here is very good and deserves another chance.
Race 5. (15:52) Play Gold Coast Qlty 900m
11 Howwonderfullifeis (Bet Now: $9.00) is a very nippy mare for Tony Gollan that resumes and keep in mind that first up last prep she bolted up at this track/distance. Fresh does appear to be best for her and she sizzled in a recent Doomben trial. Will need a bit of luck from a potentially sticky gate, but she has a touch of class and quality about her.
10 Tullio (Bet Now: $4.00) is a son of More Than Ready that resumes for the Tony Gollan camp. Hasn’t raced since August 8 over 1050m at Doomben when down the track and probably at the end of his prep and looking for the paddock behind stablemate Just Orm. Given a quiet trial to prepare and does tend to race well on the fresh side.
Fascinating runner is 1 Haunted (Bet Now: $10.00), a former Godolphin galloper that now finds himself with Sonja Kumpikas, and I assume was purchased via an online sale. This bloke has really good form around him when trained by James Cummings and though 900m is short of his best, he has class.
Race 6. (16:32) Magic Millions Rising Stars 1300m
Since being kept to sprint trips, 2 Stolen Jade (Bet Now: $3.40) has been very effective and Clarry Conners has done a very good job with her. Hasn’t raced since sitting on speed and proving too good at Kembla on Gong Day. Loved the recent trial win and she appears to be flying in readiness for her crack at the Magic Millions.
7 Oh Five Glory (Bet Now: $9.50) is generally around the mark for the Hulbert camp and that should be the case once again here. Resumed at Eagle Farm two weeks ago where she was near the speed throughout and looked to travel sweetly under Michael Rodd. She kicked and looked home for a couple of strides, but the class of Shooting For Gold kicked in and was able to wear her down. She’ll take good improvement off that and is a leading contender.
8 Pull Anchor (Bet Now: $11.00) can be dangerous at a price. Three weeks between runs since sitting off what looked a moderate speed before Bossy weaved some magic in getting a clear path and the mare exploded late to win well. Likely gets three/four wide cover from the gate and will launch at the end.
Race 7. (17:12) Magic Millions Rising Stars 1300m
1 The Astrologist (Bet Now: $3.40) is a beauty for Team Corstens. Tries hard, puts himself on speed and gives his all. That was the case in the Gold Bullion at Pakenham and in a deceptive finish, he was able to get the verdict, just, over Wild Vixen. Looks to be a bit of depth to this line up but should prove to be a leading contender.
A win here for 15 Deep Speed (Bet Now: $8.50) would just about secure his spot in the Guineas next Saturday. Talented three year old for the McEvoy camp that has been freshened up since the Spring where he ran third in a red hot form race at Flemington won by Shelby Cobra, running fast time relative to the meeting. Tick over trial was good, should land near the front and prove hard to run down.
6 Ruuca (Bet Now: $10.00) can win this for sure. Great ride from Fradd saw him two back at Doomben before racing there again a few weeks ago where he got back in an on pace dominated affair and worked home with real purpose late to run a close up fourth. If he’s within range on the turn, he does have the class and quality to take this out.
Race 8. (17:52) The Wave 1800m
2 Frosty Rocks (Bet Now: $8.00) does his best racing when he is in front and controlling so if you are on him to win, you want an aggressive ride early. That’s what he got at Randwick last time and looked home, but was nabbed late by Bigboyroy. 1800m is the query, but if he can get control in front, he’ll take some running down.
Hard to ignore 13 Kukeracha (Bet Now: $13.00) for Chris Waller. Ran second to subsequent Stakes winner The Elanora at Rosehill two back over 1800m before coming back to the mile at Eagle Farm where he had to really dig in late but credit to him. He showed plenty of ticker when it counted and won, just. Like him back up in trip and should prove hard to beat.
3 Paniagua (Bet Now: $46.00) is a North Queensland star who should have no trouble with the 1800m. He ran over 1400m in The Gateway four weeks ago and just found the class a bit rich but was still game in defeat given he was on the seven day back up. Won the Cairns Cup at 2100m so 1800m here should be okay.
Race 9. (18:25) Aquis Dubious (bm85) 1400m
Bit of a throw at the stumps in the last in the shape of 12 Akage (Bet Now: $46.00). She is hit and cold but when she is hot, she’s very talented. Far from disgraced last time out in the Just Now, getting back to near last and working home well without threatening. Has a good record at the track and if she can get luck from the draw, she’ll be finishing off better than most.
4 Phantom Falcon (Bet Now: $34.00) looks better placed at this level. Three weeks between runs since contesting the Lough Neagh where he was near the speed throughout and despite being outclassed, was far from disgraced in defeat behind Soxagon, who of course franked the form last Saturday. Going well and can win back to this level.
19 Parko (Bet Now: $41.00) can run a much improved race back on his home track. Went along at a decent clip in front three weeks ago at Doomben and battled away okay despite tiring late and being safely held by Let’s Party Maty. Always have to respect Scott Morrisey when he has runners on his home track. Can sneak a first four spot.
