Racing returns to the course proper at Morphettville on Saturday where the feature race is the $100,000 Listed Hill Smith Stakes (1800m), a possible platform for three year olds to tackle the Derby/Oaks in Melbourne. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out four metres from the 1200m-400m; Out three metres for the remainder.
Race One (13:38) : UBET Handicap (90) 2016m:
Back Me: 4 Name The Day (Bet Now: $2.70) has been beautifully placed by Ciaron Maher in recent times, winning two on the bounce, both here, and both times he has been ridden a treat. More depth here which is the query, but he has the runs on the board, hard fit and in form.
Big Danger: 5 Leica Day (Bet Now: $3.10) was really good earlier on in the prep but was a touch off behind stablemate Refulgent at Sandown. He bounced back to some form with a closing third in the Coleraine Cup behind Birds Of Tokyo. Finds a very winnable race here and loves give in the track.
Roughie: 6 Danouli (Bet Now: $21.00) ran down the track behind Name The Day where he sat last in the run and it was a race where horses near the tempo were favoured. Runs much better on the course proper and for mine, he could be a sharp improver at odds.
Race Two (14:13) : Melbourne Cup Live Racing @ Morphettville Handicap (82) 1200m:
Back Me: 6 Mail It In (Bet Now: $4.60) was heavily backed when racing on his home track at Morphettville last time out where for most of the straight he looked the winner, but he was nailed near the peg by the in form Artie Fred. Comes here with enormous upside and was set to run in a much harder race at Caulfield last weekend, so that could be a sign of stable confidence.
Big Danger: 2 Pepper The Pin (Bet Now: $4.40) looks the main threat. He has been a real revelation this time in, mainly due to the fact that he has been winning and he has been showing tremendous fight. This is a hard test because there is a lot of depth, but he has the form on the board.
Roughie: 3 Last Bullet (Bet Now: $7.50) is such an interesting runner here. Sparingly raced four year old that has the potential to be a Stakes class galloper. Has form around Jameka, Press Statement and Bon Aurum, which is some of the best form you can have. Trials have been encouraging and he does the class factor.
Race Three (14:48) : Schweppes Handicap (75) 1513m:
Back Me: 1 Snake Charmer (Bet Now: $3.20) had been tidy in a couple of runs this time in but she finally put it all together last Saturday with a dominant win on the Parks track. On the seven day back up but I don’t see that as a worry. Ticks a lot of boxes.
Big Danger: 6 Hazy One (Bet Now: $6.00) is also on the back up after finishing sixth to Snake Charmer in that race mentioned above where she sat back in the run and closed off okay late in the piece. Seven day turnaround is no issue and Poon is riding in fab form.
Roughie: 8 Sha La La (Bet Now: $41.00) was a strong winner three back at Gawler before running well in town. She ran last Sunday at Strathalbyn and made up ground but she looked to struggle on the heavy surface behind proven city performer Grand Armada. Back to her own sex and Krystal Bishop is one of the form riders in SA at the moment, so her claim is a big tick.
Race Four (15:23) : Hughes Chauffeured Limousines Handicap (70) 1600m:
Back Me: Confident that 4 Dreadlock (Bet Now: $2.35) can bounce back to the winners list. He was dreadful first up before being much better when racing over this track/distance to run second to Zipnotized. Third up now, so he should be ready fitness wise and looms as the one to go.
Big Danger: 5 On A Dream (Bet Now: $7.00) ran over this track/distance three weeks ago where he sat on speed most of the way and fought on pretty strongly to run fourth. He should be getting close to peek fitness now and though a bit of a non winner, he has to be respected.
Roughie: 9 Mandana (Bet Now: $10.00) ran third to Zipnotized before backing up seven days later when racing over 2000m here and perhaps she just didn’t quite run the trip out. Back to the mike really suits and should take some beating for sure.
Race Five (15:58) : Akeed Mofeed @ Goldin Farms Handicap (70) 1200m:
Back Me: There was a bit of arrogance about the win of 5 So You Too (Bet Now: $6.50) at Gawler last time out where he sat near the tempo and just bolted to the front, beating home the well backed Fox Hall and the well performed Arleigh. Now that he has the maiden out of the way, he can right on with it.
Big Danger: 8 Sneakers (Bet Now: $13.00) is a talented filly for Nigel Blackiston that had on pace favours when winning on debut at Cranbourne before going to Sale where she ran against the mares and was far from disgraced. Back to her own age now and she strikes a very winnable race.
Roughie: 2 My Snip (Bet Now: $10.00) ran over this track/distance three weeks back where he sat on speed and fought on pretty well late in the piece when fourth to Benz, who of course has come out and won at the Valley, so the form reads well and the little freshen up should do him the world of good.
Race Six (16:38) : James Boags Premium Handicap (75) 1050m:
Back Me: 10 Rock Status (Bet Now: $4.80) is a very talented galloper when right. He resumes for David Jolly after two runs during the Carnival, starting off with a barnstorming first up win before being midfield behind the well above average Shaf. Blows them away if he is at his best, but first up with no trials is the query.
Big Danger: 12 One More Daisy (Bet Now: $11.00) ran fourth last time out on the Parks track where she sat back near last in the run and worked home okay late in the piece when fourth to Roselli Sting. Her record on the course proper is a query but she’s in form and hard fit.
Roughie: 7 Roll The Ignition (Bet Now: $15.00) is a former Ellerton/Zahra trained mare that is now with David Jolly after failing to beat a runner home first up at Sandown behind The Dynamo. Best form would see her right in the finish. Definite market watch.
Race Seven (17:18) : Hill Smith Stakes 1800m:
Back Me: All you can do is win and that is what 1 Silvera (Bet Now: $3.00) has done in two career outings for Tony McEvoy. Dominant debut win at Mildura before going to the Morphettville Guineas where he really savaged the line to grab victory. Much more depth here, but there is plenty to like about him and 1800m will be no issue.
Big Danger: The drop in depth should suit 3 Cobbmore, (Bet Now: $26.00) who ran in a hot three year old race at Caulfield last time out and found the class a bit much behind Harlow Gold, who will be a leading Thousand Guineas contender. He’ll have no issue with the 1800m and the win prior at Geelong was very good.
Roughie: 14 Pretty Punk (Bet Now: $10.00) ran in a 1400m maiden on the Parks track last start where she was $1.20 in betting and she just bolted in as expected, winning by nearly eight lengths, admittedly against camels, but she rightfully spanked the camels. The four runs prior, she was beaten by some really talented gallopers, and the time she ran that day was the quickest of the three 1400m races.
Race Eight (17:53) : MAC Drink Driving? GROW UP Handicap (64) 1200m:
Back Me: 8 Roselli Sting (Bet Now: $3.40) was game in defeat two starts back at Gawler before backing up three days on the Parks track where he sat off the speed before peeling clear and bolting in against a similar field. That looks the right form for a race like this, so he’s clearly on top for me.
Big Danger: 14 She’s A Storm (Bet Now: $6.00) ran on the Parks track a tick over three weeks back where she got back in the run and closed off okay late in the piece to run third to Alertness. Was down to run on Wednesday at Gawler before that meeting was cancelled. She is a threat.
Roughie: 11 Freedom Road (Bet Now: $18.00) is a talented mare that resumes. Sparingly raced five year old mare that comes here off the back of no trials, so the fitness levels are the query, but she did work home hard first up last time in what looked a stronger race than what she contests here. Market watch.
BEST BET: Race Seven Number 1 Silvera
NEXT BEST: Race Four Number 4 Dreadlock
VALUE: Race Eight Number 8 Roselli Sting
