The Spring Carnival in Adelaide continues this Saturday at Morphettville where it is Morphettville Guineas Day. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out four metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:16) Clarken Racing Maiden Plate 1050m
Looks a good kick off point for 9 Virtual Insanity (Bet Now: $3.30). Had three runs in the Autumn to start his career, each race being outstanding in depth, including the Pago Pago behind Written By. Given a quiet time in a recent Tatura trial but he showed enough in the first prep to suggest he’s got ability, enough to beat these.
12 Magic Sunset (Bet Now: $2.60) is a daughter of Fighting Sun on debut for the Tony McEvoy team. This girl trialled on the Parks track a couple of weeks back and looked pretty good to my eye, winning impressively despite the margin being narrow. Bred to be a handy one so I’ll be keen to see how she goes here.
7 Mazestic (Bet Now: $8.50) is a John Macmillian trained mare resuming. She hasn’t raced since Feb 17 since contesting a maiden over 1100m here where she ran midfield behind Moon Spinner, a more than handy galloper. Been given a good break and her trial a couple of weeks back looked very good. Definite winning chance.
Race 2. (13:51) UBET Supports NJT Handicap (64) 1100m
Just has to produce the resumption and 1 Gytrash (Bet Now: $3.20) should be winning again. Gordon Richards looks to have a very good three year old on his hands here. Resumed over the 1050m here on July 28 and he absolutely bolted in, making some promising gallopers look like hacks. Freshened up and trialled enormous behind the above average Assertive Play. Confident he can repeat the dose.
I really 6 Golden Halo (Bet Now: $2.30) as a horse but just not sure where she’ll get to from the draw. She was the real eye catcher in the Quezette and you could make a case she nearly would have won had she got clear air in the straight. Tricky gate to deal with but on current form, has to be seriously respected.
4 Cross Legend (Bet Now: $3.40) is a daughter of Sebring for the Hayes/Dabernig team who had trialled up well prior to resuming over 1100m here a fortnight ago in a 3YO Maiden where the depth wasn’t overly strong but she got the job done well enough and was pretty dominant. Harder here, but looks a likely type.
Race 3. (14:26) Tindall Gask Bentley Handicap (70) 2025m
1 Netherfield (Bet Now: $3.20) does look beautifully placed at this level. Mick Price trains this five year old, who ran over the mile at Caulfield three weeks back and worked home well from off the pace behind Plein Ciel. Bit of a suspect at the trip, but looks well in at the weights after the claim and should get a lovely run just off the pace.
Didn’t foresee the resumption of 8 Arcturos (Bet Now: $5.00) at Bendigo last time over the mile. Some punters did because he was backed in from double figures but he absolutely bolted in and made some decent horses look ordinary. if we knew he’d repeat the dose, he’d be odds on. Just all depends if he can improve off a career high.
3 Royal Music (Bet Now: $7.50), on ability, is probably the best horse in the race, but he has somewhat mixed his form since coming to Australia. Debuted with a strong win at Geelong in a decent form race before running a howler over the mile here behind Rat With Goldtooth. Freshened up and ran over 1700m at the Bool where he loomed large but just ran out of puff late. Should come on from that and up to 2000m should suit.
Race 4. (15:01) Seymour Bloodstock Handicap (75) 1100m
Looks one of the best of the day does 3 Freehearted (Bet Now: $2.40) for Darren Weir. Produced an electric finale to win first up at Sandown before going to the Valley over 1200m where she did an unbelievable job to get as close as she did given the bias was against her. Did a great job to run fourth to Our Malambo. Should be cherry ripe third up from a spell, and this does look her race. Bad luck the only thing against her.
4 Kyzamba (Bet Now: $14.00) is an absolute beauty for Jim Cerchi Jr who doesn’t know how to run a bad race. Scored a sharp fresh win over 1000m at Cranbourne before being freshened up, trialling well there and winning once again over the Cranbourne 1000m after spotting the leaders a decent start in the run. Toughest test to date, but have to like the way she goes about it.
10 If Not Now When (Bet Now: $15.00) is an interesting runner. Former Henry Dwyer trained mare that is having her first run for Josh Cartwright. She showed good promise in patches when racing in Melbourne but didn’t quite measure up. No trials leading in, but she certainly has the quality to figure in the finish if she’s forward enough.
Race 5. (15:41) NJT Handicap (64) 1200m
12 Boomer Beach (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Jake Stephens trained gelding who is racing quite well this time in but can’t quite put a win on the board. Ran over 1400m at Balaklava last time where he got off the pace and tried hard but was no match late for Fleeting Feeling. Did run well here in late June and the firmer surface will help his cause.
3 Extreme Thrill (Bet Now: $3.80) is a son of Bullet Train for the Francis/Kent team who has placed in both runs this prep, both coming over 1050m here, the latest being three weeks back when just failing to get the win behind Debt Collector. Should get good cover from the draw and is well in at the weights after the claim.
18 Star Search (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Darren Weir trained mare who is racing well albeit in much easier races than this. Ran over 1200m at Donald last time where she was a notable drifter in betting and despite doing work in the run, I thought she did a pretty good job in defeat behind The Reverend Demon. Stable should always be respected when they come to Adelaide.
Race 6. (16:21) Morphettville Guineas 1600m
1 Fun Fact (Bet Now: $2.25) is WaterBott trained colt also heading down the Derby path. He has done a really good in recent times, taking on the older horses despite being a young three and measuring up quite well. His latest win came over the Sandown mile where he was on speed and he showed a really good kick late when challenged. Harder here, but he’ll be on speed and proving tough to run down.
He’s not beating much but I am liking the way 3 Just Rolling (Bet Now: $3.20) is going about his business. Debuted with a solid win in a maiden at Gawler prior to racing over 1300m on the Parks track where he did not travel at any stage but somehow picked himself up the last furlong and surged hard to grab the win. Off that win, the 1600 should be no issue.
I think up in trip will suit the Hayes/Dabernig trained 9 Pedicel (Bet Now: $31.00). She ran over 1300m at Sandown last time where she did a bit wrong in the straight and wasn’t really suited by the tempo. Back up to the mile, fitter and of the two stable runners, Cory Parish rides this one, so I think that’s a guide she’s the number one seed.
Race 7. (17:01) LUCRF Supports NJT Handicap (70) 1600m
I reckon 8 Star Patriot (Bet Now: $9.00) can bounce back into the winners list. Ran over the 1950m on the Parks track four weeks ago where she was solid in defeat but was clearly no match for the in form Dollar Dollar Bill. I think back to the mile will really suit this mare and she looks a solid each way gamble.
13 Arty Lucas (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Paul Preusker trained son of Lucas Cranach who looks well suited here. Real eye catcher two back over 1400m at Sandown before racing over the mile there where he again got back and took ground off them late. Stable should always be respected when they come to SA and a strong mile will be no issue.
14 A Little Chunky (Bet Now: $20.00) is a Jordan Frew trained mare which is racing in near career best form. Comes through the Hell On Earth race over this track/distance three weeks ago where she got back and worked home well without really threatening. Tricky draw, but she’ll get back and look to ambush late.
Race 8. (17:41) Hyland Race Colours Handicap (90) 1200m
Very interested in the Australian debut of 8 Romancer (Bet Now: $3.80), who is now with Darren Weir after formerly being with Chris Gibbs at Ruakaka. His form from NZ does read very well, though will be better suited over slightly further. In saying that, I thought he trialled up well at Tatura behind a Group l performer in Fastnet Tempest. Happy take a chance on him.
5 Hard Empire (Bet Now: $3.60) is an absolute beauty for the Richard Jolly stable who rarely runs a bad race. He ran in the Spring Stakes three weeks ago and tried very hard, taking off good ground late when second to Dollar For Dollar. His overall record is outstanding and back to benchmark level, he does look well placed.
The drop in depth should suit 2 We’ve Got This (Bet Now: $21.00), who has run down the Flemington straight in both runs this time in and has run okay without really threatening, the latest run being behind Bandipur in a race which looked pretty strong on paper. Has run well here before and at his best, he can certainly win this. Perhaps the trip away will spark him into action.
